Notes: A theoretical analysis for the laminar flow past arbitrary external surfaces of non-Newtonian fluids of the power-law model is presented. The main problem which is considered is how to predict the drag and the rate of heat transfer from an isothermal surface to the fluid. Inspectional analysis of the modified boundary-layer equations yields a general relationship both for the drag coefficient and for the Nusselt number as functions of the generalized Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The flow past a horizontal flat plate is studied in detail numerically.

Notes: A rigorous mathematical description, consisting of differential-difference equations, is presented for binary batch rectification in the plate type of column. Two approaches are taken to solving these equations for the condition of constant reflux ratio: an integration by numerical means employing an IBM 650 computer, and a hand calculation procedure that involves trial-and-error computation of batch-rectification curves, which is of interest primarily where high-speed computing equipment is not available.Enthalpy balances are used to avoid assumption of equal rate of overflow in the tower; weight units are used instead of mole units; means for accounting for holdup in the condenser-accumulator system are described. Criteria of convergence and stability of the numerical solution are presented. The validity of the results of the proposed calculation procedures is substantiated by the close agreement of experimental and calculated batch-rectification curves.

Notes: A boundary-layer analysis of laminar film condensation on a vertical plate has been carried out to study the effects of superheated vapor and noncondensable gases. For a pure, superheated vapor the effects of superheating on the surface heat transfer are accounted for by a simple modification of previously available results for saturated vapors. For a given temperature difference between the plate surface and the liquid-vapor interface, superheating increases the heat transfer to the surface, but only to a modest extent for most practical situations. Although free convection was not included in the analysis, its role has been estimated to be small. For noncondensable gases the analysis shows that the presence of a few per cent of noncondensable in the bulk of the vapor causes a great reduction in the surface heat transfer. The fact that the predicted reduction is substantially larger than that found experimentally indicates that free convection, which is not included in the analysis, plays an important role when noncondensables are present.

Notes: An expression for the “average” viscosity of a polymeric material realized during an injection molding shot is developed. From this expression certain rheological quantities are taken which should better express ease of molding than do conventional testing methods. Comparison is made between actual molding experience and quality as predicted by the new method.

Notes: Chemical structures limited to phosphines and their derivatives, including phosphine oxides, phosphonium salts and halogen-phosphorus compounds useful for fireproofing are discussed. In addition to these P-C bond containing compounds, structures containing P-O-C bonds are mentioned only if they are directly formed from halophosphorus substances. The general approaches to fireproofing are described. They include physical changes, unreactive additives, reactive comonomers, substitution of other functional groups and addition to a preformed polymer. Much of the literature is reviewed and the commercial importance of certain methods for both cloth and plastics are indicated.

Notes: Polymerization of the monomer was investigated in organic solvents such as nitro-compounds, amines, amides, nitriles, ethers, esters, ketones, aldehydes, acids, anhydrides, and some heterocyclic compounds. Crystalline polyvinylchloride was produced in aliphatic aldehyde media at temperatures ranging from 0° to 60°C and highly crystalline polyvinylchloride was synthesized in the presence of preliminarily oxidized butyric aldehyde. The electron diffraction picture of the non-oriented specimen of the polymer exhibited 19 distinct reflexes.
