Notes: Torsional modulus-temperature data have been obtained on heterogeneous polymer compositions prepared by several procedures. Both the state of aggregation of the component chain molecules and their degree of compatibility are significant variables. Modulus curves similar to those for crystalline polymers can be obtained from incompatible polymers having glass temperatures sufficiently far apart. Detailed interpretations are presented for modulus curves of both individual homopolymers and bicomponent heterogeneous polymer mixtures.

Notes: Liquids forced from a high-pressure zone into a low-pressure zone often cross the equilibrium pressure for the liquid temperature and disintegrate into a spray by partial evolution of vapor. The ordinary aerosol dispenser is a common example of this operation, and flash boiling is another. This paper reports on a study of the sprays formed by such a process and of the mechanism of spray formation. Sprays from water and Freon-11 jets were analyzed for drop sizes, drop velocities, and spray patterns. The breakup mechanism was analyzed and data presented to show some of the controlling factors.A critical superheat was found, above which the jet of liquid is shattered by rapid bubble growth within it. The bubble-growth rate was correlated with the Weber number, and a critical value of the Weber number was found to be 12.5 for low-viscosity liquids. The mean drop size was also correlated with Weber number and degree of superheat. The spray from rough orifices and sharp-edged orifices was compared with sprays produced from cold liquids by other techniques and was found to be comparable in all respects except temperature.

Notes: An apparatus has been constructed for measurement of the minimum filming temperature (MFT) of a polymer emulsion. The apparatus consists of a metal bar along which a temperature gradient may be maintained. Recessed channels are provided in which emulsion samples are spread and allowed to dry. Eight thermocouple stations along the bar are connected to a continuous recorder. Following drying of the film, the minimum temperature at which a continuous film is formed is determined. Testing of the apparatus on one emulsion examined under a variety of conditions and on samples of varying composition has demonstrated the reliability, versatility, and utility of the apparatus.

Notes: Investigations are being conducted on the factors involved in the breakup of Newtonian and non-Newtonian (viscoelastic) liquids in high velocity airstreams. Viscoelastic solutions are formed by the addition of small amounts of polymeric modifiers to the test liquid. The mechanism of breakup is shown to be significantly different between the thickened and unthickened solutions. It was found that Newtonian liquid drops are broken into very fine particles by a breakup mechanism which begins with a stripping of the liquid from the surface of the drop. On the other hand, drops of non-Newtonian liquids break up by formation of ligaments rather than by surface stripping and are broken into much larger particles. An increase in viscosity by a factor of 25 in the Newtonian liquids showed no significant change in the breakup mechanism.

Notes: First and second order effects of density and melt index were found to be significant with stress level a significant factor in determining failure time using Maltese Cross shaped specimens. Stress and temperature had the greater influence on failure. Influence of temperature-viscosity interaction is of concern along with transition in the mode of failure from ductile to brittle type. Reduction in the effect of melt index with increasing density is in accord with new theories on polyethylene crystal structure. It was also shown that higher modulus materials fail more rapidly.
