Notes: Summary This work compares and evaluates viscosity data obtained on similar fluids by two widely accepted high shear techniques. Both the jet and concentric cylinder viscometers are useful high shear methods. The major limitation of the jet viscometer is an inability to distinguish quantitatively between energy losses in laminar flow and those due to capillary geometry and experimental conditions. For example, the jet viscometer gives minima in viscosity-shear rate correlations which are difficult to treat. These minima are not found in concentric cylinder viscometer data for the same and similar fluids. The apparent viscosity increase at high shear in the jet may be due to factors other thanReynold's turbulence, as previously supposed. This effect may be due to molecular relaxation phenomena in certain cases. The jet viscometer might thus be used to evaluate molecular relaxation and/or other phenomena contributing to this effect. For a variety of systems, the concentric cylinder viscometer gives significantly smaller temporary viscosity losses due to shear than do the jet viscometer data. These comparisons are made using the maximum jet shear rate at the capillary wall. The differences are, of course, larger if average shear rates are used to compare the data. It is concluded that the jet viscometer results tend to be erroneous. This is possibly due to capillary end effects or problems with kinetic energy corrections.

Notes: Summary The structure of the Z disc has been studied in thin sections of striated muscle fibers from a wide variety of vertebrates. A common organization is found in all muscles examined. The disc shows a regular pattern made up of dense lines which seem to connect the actin filaments from adjacent sarcomeres. The lines are sometimes disposed to form a regular zigzag configuration; in other orientations with respect to the plane of the section the morphology is confused and, in still other images, the dense lines continuous with the actin filaments seem to go straight through the Z disc. In cross section this structure corresponds to a square pattern of considerable regularity. The intersections in the square pattern mark the location in the plane of the section of the actin filaments from adjacent sarcomeres. Dense lines form the edges of the squares and appear to represent condensations of Z-disc material, i.e., the lines in the zigzag. The possible origin of the structure as a product of the stretching of a membrane is discussed, together with functional interpretations of the Z disc.

Notes: Summary A comparative cytochemical and electron microscopic study on the ergastoplasm in the secretory cells of the seminal vesicles of castrated, normal, and testosterone-treated mice is reported. Castration induced a progressive decline in cytoplasmic basophilia (identified with ribonucleic acid) and testosterone treatment caused an enhancement over the normal level. There were corresponding changes in total area of ergastoplasmic membranes, but the expected changes in population density of ribosomes (ribonucleoprotein particles) in the intercisternal cytoplasm did not occur. These observations conflict with the currently-accepted view that almost all of the ribonucleic acid responsible for cytoplasmic basophilia in adult mammalian cells is contained in the ribosomes. Other changes in the fine structure of these cells in the experimental animals are briefly described.

Notes: Summary Solutions are obtained in frictionless, steady barotropic flow for the effect of simple bathymetric features on an initially uniform zonal current. For flow towards the west, an infinitely long ridge or valley causes an infinite streamline deflection while for flow towards the east, either an infinite deflection or a stationary Rossby, wave pattern may occur. Several examples are given which illustrate the behavior of these waves.

Notes: A concentric cylinder viscometer was used to measure high shear viscosities of polyisobutene solutions. Data were obtained in laminar flow from 20-100°C. and at shear rates from 5 × 102 to 8 × 105 sec.-1. Three polymer molecular weights, 4.0 × 104-2.2 × 106, in three concentrations from 11.5-49.2 wt.-% polymer were tested in cetane. The viscosity of cetane at all test temperatures was low and independent of shear rate up to 106 sec.-1. Therefore, variations in viscosity with shear were due totally to the effect of polymer. Viscosities of 11.5% solutions of low molecular weight polyisobutene, 4-6 × 104, approached limiting viscosities at both high and low rates of shear. Viscosity changed markedly between the limiting values as did the flow activation energy at constant shear rate, ΔE*r. At extremes of both high and low shear rate ΔE*r appeared to be insensitive to polymer molecular weight. Solutions containing the highest molecular weight and concentration of polyisobutene reached shear stresses for polymer degradation before a limiting high shear viscosity could be observed. For all solutions, ΔE*r was independent of temperature form 20-100°C. At low shear, ΔE*r increased with polymer concentration. At high shear, the concentration dependence was reversed, with the highest concentration having the lowest ΔE*r. A simple shear correlation was found to superimpose all data for which reduced viscosities could be derived. Reduced specific viscosities superimposed on a master curve when plotted against log (shear stress/T°K). The correlation covered data at all temperatures and concentrations for the two lower molecular weight polymer solutions.
