Description / Table of Contents:
The reduction of TiCl4 by means of dilithium 2,2′-dipyridyl in the presence of surplus 2,2′-dipyridyl yields finally tris-dipyridyl complexes of titanium of the oxidation states 0 and -1: [TiDipy3] and Li[TiDipy3].In contrast to the properties of vanadium and chromium which are forming uninterrupted rows of tris-dipyridyl complexes of all electron configurations from d3 to d6, there is no experimental evidence for the formation of the titanium complex ions [TiDipy3]+ and [TiDipy3]2- with a d3- and d6-configuration, respectively. This special behaviour of titanium which is also demonstrated by the diamagnetic properties of [TiDipy3] is obviously due to the formation of special bond orbitals in the tris-dipyridyl titanium coordination compounds.
Notes:
