Description / Table of Contents:
The knowledge of the different properties of the various forms of low-temperature aluminium oxide makes the preparation of aluminium hydroxide mixtures as a basic material for catalysts an interesting problem. The precipitation of the hydroxides was performed in two steps from a sodium aluminate solution by means of nitric acid. In the first stage of nitric acid adding up to a pH value of 11.5 and subsequent ageing, predominatly trioxides are formed while in the second stage of the process up to a pH value of 5.5 the formation of boehmite occurs. By controlling the variation of the pH value during ageing and varying the precipitation temperature, i. e. from 25 up to 90°C, the preparation of mixtures having different proportions of boehmite, bayerite, gibbsite, and an amorphous phase was achieved. The reproducibility was satisfactory (Analysis of the mixtures by X-ray methods of measuring the intensities of characteristic interferences, determination of the water content, and DTA).
Notes:
