Notes: Homopolymer of 2-methyl-N-vinylimidazole and copolymer of the monomer with acrylamide were coupled with some aromatic diazonium compounds to give polymeric azo dyes. The dyestuff prepared from the homopolymer was soluble in water only when it was coupled with diazonium component containing sulfonic acid group, but the dyestuffs prepared from the copolymer were soluble. The reactivity, chemical structure, color, and dyeability of the polymeric dyes are discussed by comparing them with those of the corresponding monomeric dyes. The color fastness of the polymeric dyes was found to be in a high class; the rubbing and dry-cleaning fastness were especially excellent.

Notes: As part of an investigation of the graft copolymerization of acrylamide onto fibrous polymers, the homopolymerization of acrylamide initiated with relatively high concentrations of ammonium cerium (IV) nitrate was studied. The resulting polyacrylamide was purified by means of fractionation with Sephadex. The polymer contains one cerium atom per molecule, probably as an end group. Paper electrophoresis showed that the cerium atom is combined chemically to the polymer molecule. The IR spectrum of the polymer did not differ from that of polyacrylamide initiated by potassium persulfate, except the bands assigned to nitrate ion. The spectrum showed no band assigned to an unsaturated end group. A novel termination mechanism of the polymerization or formation of a complex compound between polymer and cerium is expected.

Notes: In the presence of ferric ion, polymerization of acrylamide initiated with ceric ion was studied. The resulting polyacrylamide was found to contain cerium and iron, and the total metal content of the polymer corresponded to one atom per macromolecule. Experimental data of paper electrophoresis, polarography and IR spectroscopy suggested that the metals combined chemically with the polymer molecule. A probable mechanism of introduction of the metal into the polymer chain is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Polymerisation von Methylmethacrylat wurde in Essigsäure in Anwesenheit von Cer(IV)-Ionen und Pinacol untersucht.
Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of ceric ion and pinacol in acetic acid solution has been investigated. Acetone formed in the reaction products has been determined and the mechanism and kinetics of the polymerization have been studied. It has been confirmed that the primary radical formed from pinacol reacts with not only the monomer to produce a monomer radical and initiate the polymerization but also with ceric ion. Under the present experimental conditions, the reaction of the primary radical with ceric ion is about 127 times as fast as that with monomer. The monomer radical produced reacts with another monomer to propagate polymerization. The polymerization is terminated by reaction of the polymer radical with ceric ion. The rate of polymerization was proportional to [pinacol], [monomer]2 and reciprocal to [CeIV].
