A method to determine second order glass transitions at the surface of polymer films is described. The method consists in measuring the temperature dependence of the contact angle, which changes discontinuously as a consequence of the discontinuous change of the surface tension of the solid in the transition interval. The second order glass transitions of a vinylacetate-vinylchloride-copolymer and of a chlorinated rubber film are detected in the temperature dependence of wetting of water and glycerol.

Es wird ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Einfriertemperatur von Polymerfilmen an deren Oberfläche beschrieben. Die Methode beruht auf einer Bestimmung der Temperaturabhängigkeit des Randwinkels, den Flüssigkeiten, die die Polymerfilme nicht quellen, auf diesen ausbilden. Da Glasumwandlungen die Festkörperoberflächenspannung diskontinuierlich ändern, müssen sich auch die Randwinkel in dieser Umwandlung diskontinuierlich ändern. Mit der genannten Methode wurden die Einfriertemperaturen eines Vinylacetat-Vinylchlorid-Copolymerfilmes und eines Chlorkautschukfilmes in der Temperaturabhängigkeit des Randwinkels gegen Wasser und Glycerin nachgewiesen.
