The shrinkage temperature (Ts) of collagen was determined in mixtures of water and organic solvents. Ts is decreased especially by alcohols and the difference increases with growing length of their carbon-chains. Diluted solutions of the homologues fatty acid salts produce similar effects and in urea solutions the shrinkage temperatures change as well. These results are correlated to the influence of hydrophobic interactions on the stabilisation of the collagen structure.

Die Schrumpfungstemperatur (Ts) von Kollagen in verschiedenen Lösungsmittel-Wasser-Gemischen wird untersucht. Es zeigt sich, daß besonders Alkohole einen Ts-erniedrigenden Einfluß ausüben, der um so größer ist, je länger die Kohlenstoffkette des Alkohols ist. In analoger Weise werden die Ts-Werte durch verdünnte Lösungen von Salzen homologer Fettsäuren beeinflußt. Diese Befunde sowie die Ts-Änderung in verschieden konzentrierten Harnstofflösungen werden im Zusammenhang mit der Möglichkeit diskutiert, daß im Kollagenmolekül hydrophobe Bindungen die Struktur mitbestimmen.
