Notes: The calculation of the polarizabilities of spherical molecules is discussed in the light of the average excitation energy approximation to perturbation theory. It is shown that whilst information about the energy in external fields can always be obtained from polarization phenomena, some information about the unperturbed wave function also can be obtained from magnetic susceptibility and Cotton-Mouton effect measurements. In the case of argon such information was found to agree with the results of self-consistent-field calculations. Predictions of the Cotton-Mouton constants of krypton and xenon are made.

Notes: Polarization tensors are discussed in terms of their intrinsic symmetry group which is a direct product of the point group and the subgroup of the permutation group relevant to the experiment. The study of these latter groups is simplified by use of the isomorphism with certain point groups and permutations of suffixes can be visualized by rotations and reflections of the vertices of various objects in space. The approach unites the previous treatments and provides a means of constructing the bases for the irreducible tensor components. The difficulties introduced by Laplace's equation are explained and the information obtainable from induced birefringence experiments (Kerr and Cotton-Mouton effects) discussed for various systems.

Notes: The development of neuromasts was studied in two species of teleosts, Cirrhina mrigala Ham. Buch. and Ophicephalus punctatus Bloch, and the findings are presented and discussed. It has been discovered, in the course of this investigation, that a neuromast arises by a process of invagination  -  a fact hitherto not reported. The occurrence of the dorsal lateral line and the accessory lateral line of the trunk, in addition to the main lateral line, has also been reported for the first time for teleosts, although known for other bony fishes.

Notes: Frog sciatic nerves were incubated for 24 hours in either glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine, leucine, γ-aminobutyric acid, glutamine, or pentanedioic acid (all labeled with C14), and the rates of release of these compounds were monitored under resting conditions and during stimulation. Upon stimulation, the rate or release of glutamic acid increased an average of 200% above the resting rate. This extra release is highly specific with regard to molecular size and structure, since of the compounds tested only glutamic acid gave significant increases in rates of release during stimulation. Ouabain (0.1 mM) had no effect on the rate of release; however, sodium azide (0.2 mM or 1.0 mM) completely eliminated the extra release during excitation, indicating that the increased permeability to glutamic acid is energy-dependent. Competition experiments show that the extra release of glutamic acid can be eliminated with 10 mM concentrations of non-isotopic choline. The hypothesis is advanced that glutamic acid is actively extruded by a highly specific carrier mechanism.

Notes: The apparently inconsistent reports on flagellar ATPase properties may be resolved by elimination of adenylate kinase from the system. Removal of the adenylate kinase from alkaline M/2 KCl extracts of bull sperm flagella yields a spermosin-ATPase which liberates only the terminal phosphate of ATP. In any case spermosin is preferentially activated by calcium. However, combination of spermosin with flactin (e.g., by addition of digitonin and MgCl2 to the extraction medium) produces an ATPase much more highly activated by magnesium. But flactospermosin has so far resisted purification from its adenylate kinase contaminant. In divalent cation activation, pH optima and nature of ATP hydrolysis, the flagellar contractile protein system closely parallels the muscle system.

Description / Table of Contents: The substitution equilibrium between ZnFe2O4 and NiO, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$${\rm ZnFe}_2 {\rm O}_{\rm 4} + {\rm NiO} = {\rm NiFe}_2 {\rm O}_4 + {\rm ZnO},$$\end{document} should be studied. For this purpose a mixture of ZnFe2O4 and NiO with the mole ratio 1:1 was fired in dependence on temperature and time. The final products were controlled by measurement of saturation magnetization and CURIE temperatures and by evaluation of X-ray diffractometric measurements. The values obtained from the measurements of saturation magnetization have been evaluated by several kinetic equations, from which was calculated the activation energy of the reaction. A short thermodynamical consideration is included.
