    Notes: —Nootkatone, a sesquiterpene ketone previously reported as a primary flavoring constituent in grapefruit oil, has been tested for flavoring effect in grapefruit juice reconstituted from foam-mat-dried crystals. Unexpected difficulties were encountered in achieving uniform dispersion of the nootkatone. After a satisfactory method was developed, flavor thresholds and preferences were established by comparing samples of juice containing nootkatone with controls. Nootkatone was detectable at 1 ppm in water and at 6 ppm in 10.5’Brix reconstituted grapefruit juice. Threshold levels were the same in samples with and without “locked-in” oil. Flavor effects were evaluated on four samples: 1) nootkatone isolated from grapefruit oil; 2) a sample of nootkatone synthesized from valencene, and purified repeatedly by GLC; 3) a routinely purified sample of synthetic nootkatone purified by GLC; and 4) a sample of crystalline nootkatone. All had the same threshold. To some judges the nootkatone was very bitter at a level above 7 ppm. For most iudges however, at slightly above threshold level (about 6—7 ppm) the flavor and aroma of grapefruit iuice were enhanced by the presence of nootkatone.

    Notes: The structure of cells in the colleterial glands of the Cecropia silkmoth was examined. Morphologically and functionally the gland is divided into two regions, a tubular one in which columnar protein-synthesizing cells are located, and an expanded region in which flattened cells with very different structure are most prominent. The fine structure of the latter cells which are presumed to secrete a phenolic glucoside, closely resembles that of cells described in the colleterial glands of orthopterans. The protein-secreting cells have many features normally associated with pancreatic acinar, and other cells of similar function. Among these are extensive rough endoplasmic reticulum, an elaborate Golgi complex, and a modest number of mitochondria. Other features which are less usual in cells of this type are an elaborate secretory apparatus consisting of a cuticular tubule inserted into a microvilli-lined cavity at the apical end of the cell, and large numbers of cytolysomes, myelin figures, and lipid droplets. A chitogenous cell with a very distinct and specific type of ultrastructure is found associated with the secretory cell. This cell type is attached to the cuticular elements of the gland, and the main features of its cytoplasm are extensive bundles of microtubules which presumably serve as supportive elements for the secretory cells.

    Notes: The angular distribution function P(θ) for intensity of light scattered by a dilute solution of comblike branched molecules has been determined for three situations of some interest for evaluation of experimental data: (1) the molecules are identical with branches of equal length attached equidistantly along linear backbone chains; (2) the molecules are homogeneous in mass, with the same number of branches on each molecule, but the branches are distributed at random along the chain; (3) branches and main chains are still uniform, but the molecules are heterogeneous in mass with the number of branches per molecule distributed according to the binomial distribution and the branches in any molecule spaced randomly along the backbone. Examination of numerical results shows that the scattering functions for models (1) and (2) are not very different. The function for case (3) is somewhat different from the others when the mean number of branches per molecule is small but they contain a large fraction of the mass of the molecule. Over a limited range of the pertinent variables (corresponding roughly to observations on typical vinyl polymers of molecular weights up to 106) all three functions agree quite well with P(θ) for homogeneous linear chains with the same mean-square radius of gyration.

    Notes: Light-scattering, viscometric and osmometric studies have been carried out on dilute solutions of polycarbonate fractions both in a good solvent and in theta solvents. The data span the molecular weight interval 5 〈 10-3M 〈 760. It has been concluded that: (1) the overall behavior in dilute solution is consistent with a flexible chain conformation; (2) the ratio of the unperturbed mean-square radius to the molecular weight, or to the number of chain elements, is larger than commonly observed for vinyl polymers; (3) the ratio of the unperturbed radius to the radius calculated for a chain with free rotation about valence bonds has the unusually small value 1.3; and (4) the hydrodynamic behavior of the chain may reflect partical draining affects.

    Notes: Sugar polythioacetals have been prepared by polymerization of sugars with dithiols in dioxane solution with hydrogen fluoride catalyst. Polymerization was also carried out by using liquid hydrogen fluoride as solvent and catalyst. The polymers are colorless powders with inherent viscosities in the range of 0.03-0.24 and melting points of 81-160°C. The polythioacetals of the shorter-chain dithiols are soluble in polar solvents; those of the longer-chain dithiols are partially soluble.
