Notes: Abstract The one particle problem in a spherical potential is examined in Classical Mechanics from a group theorical point of view. The constants of motion are classified according to their behaviour under the rotation groupSO(3), i.e. according to the irreducible representationsD j ofSO(3) (section 1). The Lie algebras ofSO(4) andSO(3) are explicitly built in terms of Poisson brackets for an arbitrary potential, from global considerations. The Kepler and the 3 dimensional oscillator problems are shown to play particular roles with respect to these groups (sections 2 and 3). In the last section, the Kepler problem is analyzed with the aid of theSO(4) group instead of the Lie algebra. It is proved that the transformations generated by the angular momentum and the Runge-Lenz vector form indeed a group of canonical transformations isomorphic toSO(4). Consequences with respect to the quantization problem are examined.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé 1.
Notes: Abstract Brett (1964) has constructed a new apparatus for sampling macrofauna of the marine benthos. This apparatus is derived from the “gold sucker” employed byScuba divers for underwater work. It was used from 1965 for research on the productivity of some sand bottom communities (Venus gallina community ofPetersen). Some improvements have been made to obtain a good quantitative sampler. A comparison has been made between the biomasses obtained with an “Orange-Peel” grab and the hydraulic aspirator ofBrett, respectively; advantages and disadvantages are discussed.

Abstract: Summary Epimyrma algeriana, a newly discovered species of Ants is described in the three castes. This algerian form is akin toEpimyrma ravouxi (André) of France, of which, only four females are known. E. algeriana is a parasite onLeptothorax spinosa (Forel) in the moistest stations but remains always scarse. The female is little prolific and relatively fragile in breeding. Males and females hatched during summer are few in number; there are more ♂ than ♀; the workers appear later. Then the community seems bound to degeneration. The parasite introduction seems to be facilited by a cold and moist micro-climate, reducing the reactions of the host. The adoption of a young female ofEpimyrma by workers and larvae community ofL. spinosa, bred at a temperature of 12° Centigr. has been successfully achieved.

Notes: Summary The minimal size of active membrane fragments from sonic homogenates of a Nitrobacter cell suspension is about 22 mμ. Nitrite oxidizing activity is absent from particles smaller than that although the distribution of cytochrome a, a link in the respiratory chain responsible for nitrite oxidation, does not show any abnormality below the critical size indicated. Two independent estimates of the parameters of the cumulative distribution function for particle size in sonic homogenates have been made using either statistics from electron micrographs or sedimentation pattern observed after density gradient centrifugation. The distribution function was found to be of the log-normal type which was considered to be a consequence of the observed kinetics of sonic comminution. Another estimate of the parameters of the distribution function was made by fixed angle centrifugation, a method much less accurate with respect to size determination but which allowed a rapid estimate of nitrite oxidizing capacity remaining in particles smaller than the given size. Results from the first two determinations of the distribution function for particle size and of its parameters were then used for correcting the error in the estimate of the critical size from the activity found in supernatants from centrifugations in fixed angle rotors.

Notes: Summary Calorimetric estimates of the utilization efficiency of the free-energy derived from substrate oxidation by cell suspensions of two nitrifying bacteria, Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, provided two ranges of values: 11 to 27% and 15 to 51%, respectively. About 15 to 30% of the utilized free-energy is used for driving endergonic reactions other than CO2 fixation, probably the synthesis of polyphosphates. The molar heat of substrate oxidation does not seem to be influenced by the age of cells harvested during growth or by the length of the incubation period during which cells have been kept in a buffer suspension in a starved condition. The loss of respiratory activity measured either by oxygen uptake or heat evolution in the presence of the specific substrate, nitrite or ammonium, decreases according to kinetics which are influenced by the aerobiosis of the suspension. The viability of the starved cells decreases in a way which is similar to that of the respiratory activity. It seemed impossible to obtain cells which had lost their viability but kept the ability to oxidize their substrate. Two inhibitors of the respiratory chain, quinacrine and cyanide, are without effect on the molar heat of substrate oxidation and consequently on the free-energy utilization efficiency. 2.4 dinitrophenol did decrease the rate of heat evolution during substrate oxidation at concentrations at which the rate of oxygen uptake was not depressed, with the consequences that free-energy efficiency was apparently increased.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Estimation of the electron-nuclear hyperfine coupling constants from molecular wave functions is discussed on the example of nitroxide free radicals. A new method of calculation, which is derived from self-consistent field theories, is used to determine both π and σ molecular orbitals in these compounds. Results agree well with experiment and allow the assignment of some coupling constants in the iminoxyl free radicals (coupling constants of formaldiminoxyl and its syn and anti phenyl derivatives).

Notes: Summary A study is made of the vertical migrations of several zooplankters in a recent artificial freshwater reservoir in the lower part of Belgium. Two series of cyclical observations were made, the first one during summer stagnation (30 hours), the second one during autumn overturn (48 hours). In both cases numerous plankton collections were made at different depths and a number of physico-chemical features of the water, suspected to show a diurnal rhythm too, were determined (temperature, O2, pH, HCO inf3 sup− ). Using the statistical technique basically developed by Ricker, significant vertical migrations were found during the stratification period and for every species that was taken into consideration. During overturn, vertical migrations were much less evident and in some cases even doubtful. The causality of this phenomenon is briefly discussed.
