Notes: A comparison of the kinetic and diffusional models for solid-gas reactions occurring in a spherical particle is presented. The similarities and differences of the unreacted-core shrinking model and the homogeneous model are examined in light of the rate-controlling factors. In view of the similarity of the two models, it is shown that erroneous conclusions in regard to the mechanism and the activation energies may be drawn from an analysis of the experimental data. A more versatile model is presented in order to augment the two models so that wider varieties of solid-gas reaction systems may be treated. The concept of effectiveness factors in solid-gas reactions is introduced, and the influence of diffusion is ascertained.

Notes: The effects of ultrasonic vibrations on heat transfer to water and methanol by natural convection and by boiling were measured at three ultrasonic energy levels with frequency ranging from 20.6 to 306 kcycles/sec., using electrically heated platinum wires of diameters 0.007 and 0.010 in. Up to an eight-fold increase in heat transfer coefficient was obtained in natural convection, but the effects diminished with increased temperature difference and became negligible in the well-developed nucleate boiling region. High-speed photographs showed that the increase was due to the motion of cavitation bubbles on the wire surface. The heat transfer results were correlated by local cavitation activity values measured by a technique developed for this work.

Notes: This study concerns rates of evaporation and mass transfer of water vapor from a heated salt solution through a water repellent porous membrane to a cooled water condensate. This transfer is a result of temperature differences and corresponding vapor pressure differences across the membrane. Three groups of experiments were carried out which indicate that the major factor influencing the rates of transfer is diffusion through a stagnant gas in the membrane pores. However, an equation considering film heat transfer coefficients, membrane thermal conductivity, and an empiricial correction based on temperature driving force appears to be necessary for representing all the data. The empirical correction appears to be related to internal condensation and possibly diffusion along surfaces.

Notes: The diffusion of carbon dioxide through ethanol-water, benzene toluene, and carbon tetrachloride benzene was studied over the entire range of compositions for the solvent pairs. The results were interpreted in terms of an effective binary diffusion coefficient. Two semiempirical correlations were derived with the aid of absolute reaction rate theory to predict the effective binary diffusion coefficient from the binary diffusion coefficients of the solute in the individual pure solvents. These equations, although only crude approximations, reproduced the experimental data for six diffusion systems fairly well, including the highly nonideal solvent mixture ethanol-water.

Notes: Film boiling above a horizontal surface has been investigated theoretically and experimentally at standard gravity and 1 atm. Theoretical film boiling results for conventional fluids have been extended, on the basis of interfacial instability due to gravity, to include liquefied gases properties, such as low viscosity and small surface tension. In the experiments, primarily ordinary liquid helium I has been studied to extend the range of the film boiling Rayleigh numbers (based upon Laplace's reference length) from about 107 (reported for room temperature liquids) to values of the order of magnitude unity. The heat transfer data taken at surface excess temperatures ΔT (above the boiling point) between 80° and 300°K. have been correlated with a theoretical model which presumes the absence of any scaling length (Laplace length) associated with surface tension. At low ΔT the experimental results have been found to agree with a model which presumes a negligible influence of a scaling length due to surface tension and absence of detectable viscosity effects.

Notes: Similarity transformations are possible for power law fluids in the following systems: momentum transfer in general Falkner-Skan flows and Goldstein flows; and momentum and energy transfer in forced convection about a right angle wedge, natural convection with constant heat flux at the boundary surface, and general Falkner-Skan flows with nonconstant heat conductivity and a restricted boundary temperature distribution. Similarity transformations are also possible for momentum and heat transfer of Eyring viscous fluids about a right angle wedge. A numerical solution is obtained for forced convection of power law fluids about a right angle wedge with an isothermal surface. From the numerical results an approximate expression is obtained for the local Nusselt number.
