Notes: In an attempt to clarify certain questions of the configuration of amylose in aqueous solution, carboxymethyl groups were introduced into corn amylose (degree of substitution ca. 0.8) and certain properties of the derivative (CMA) studied. The intrinsic viscosity exhibits a strong increase between pH 2 and 6 but remains constant at higher pH. A pH 6 and above, CMA exhibits typical polyelectrolyte behavior. CMA does not form a complex with iodine at pH 6 or above but does form a violet-colored complex at low pH. The absorption maximum of the CMA complex lies at a somewhat lower wavelength (550 mμ) than that of the complex formed by the parent amylose. The reduced viscosity and specific optical rotation of the CMA-iodine complex remains constant up to a concentration of 1.2 mg. iodine/100 mg. CMA, then both properties decrease with further increases of iodine content. All of the above results and hydrogen ion titration behavior are in agreement with the hypothesis that CMA exists as a coil of short helical segments in acid solution and that these helical segments break down on ionization of the carboxyl groups. The specific optical rotation of CMA increases between pH 2 and 6, remains constant between pH 6 and 12, and decreases above pH 12. This later result shows that the similar decrease in rotation seen in amylose cannot be attributed, at least entirely, to a helix-coil transition. There must be another effect on optical rotation, direct or indirect, of the ionization of hydroxyl groups.

Notes: The reactions of trans-2,5-dimethoxy-4′-aminostilbene with poly(maleic anhydride-co-methylvinyl ether) and trans-2,5-dimethoxy-4′-isocyanatostilbene with poly(oxy-1,4-phenyleneisopropylidene:1,4-phenyleneoxy-2-hydroxytrimethylene) yield polymeric systems which undergo rapid crosslinking upon short exposure to ultraviolet light. The extent of photocrosslinking as a function of exposure time was determined by the decrease of the trans-stilbene ultraviolet absorption at 350 nm.

Notes: Acrylonitrile was grafted onto cellulose with the use of ceric salt as initiator and the grafting was found to be maximum at 0.6N acid concentration. The effect of monomer and initiator concentration on the extent of grafting was studied. A new method for quantitative estimation of extent of grafting on cellulose was developed and its validity was established. The grafted samples with 20% increase in weight were found to be highly resistant to microorganisms.

Notes: The kinetic behavior of heterogeneous microbial populations was studied in a continuous flow completely mixed reactor operated at various dilution rates. Glucose was used as the growth-limiting nutrient. The physiological growth parameters for cells harvested from continuous flow reactors were determined using batch experiments. It, was found that the growth parameters, maximum growth rate (μm), saturation constant (ks), and cell yield (Y) vary for each dilution rate, and cannot be considered as precise constants in depicting the kinetic behavior of heterogeneous populations. In addition, it was found that the yield coefficients obtained from batch experiments were always lower than those obtained from continuous flow experiments. Levels of substrate and biological solids calculated for different dilution rates using growth constants from batch experiments did not agree with the experimental values observed in steady-state experiments. However, when the yield values from, the continuous flow experiments were used in conjunction with batch values for μm and ks the theoretical and experimental dilute-out curves agreed fairly closely (within the range needed for engineering prediction) until the culture began to wash out of the unit. In general, the data substantiated the use of the single phase relationship between growth rate and substrate concentration described by the Monod equation, μ = μmS/(ks + s).

Notes: This study concerns rates of evaporation and mass transfer of water vapor from a heated salt solution through a water repellent porous membrane to a cooled water condensate. This transfer is a result of temperature differences and corresponding vapor pressure differences across the membrane. Three groups of experiments were carried out which indicate that the major factor influencing the rates of transfer is diffusion through a stagnant gas in the membrane pores. However, an equation considering film heat transfer coefficients, membrane thermal conductivity, and an empiricial correction based on temperature driving force appears to be necessary for representing all the data. The empirical correction appears to be related to internal condensation and possibly diffusion along surfaces.
