    Notes: Acetal copolymers prepared from trioxane and ethylene oxide consist of polyoxymethylene segments with oxyethylene units distributed in the chain. These oxyethylene units profoundly affect the thermal and chemical behavior of the polymer. The presence of the oxyethylene units renders the copolymer amenable to thermal or base hydrolytic treatment which results in a final product with stable endgroups. The copolymers so obtained are significantly more stable, thermally and chemically, than acetylated polyoxymethylene homopolymer.

    Notes: The triphenylphosphine-initiated photopolymerization of acrylic monomers was studied. Only those monomers containing an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group could be photoinitiated by triphenylphosphine, styrene being unaffected at the level of initiator employed. Kinetic studies with methyl methacrylate showed that the propagation was free radical in nature. Analysis of the resulting polymer indicated that it contained one phosphorus atom per chain. Ultraviolet spectral data suggested the formation of complexes between the triphenylphosphine and each monomer for which it is initiator. A relationship between the complex and the polymerization was shown to exist. A mechanism is proposed, involving a light-activated dipole interaction between the carbonyl oxygen and the phosphorus atom with the ultimate formation of a methacrylate type of free radical.

    Notes: Lithiated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) has been used as an initiator for the graft polymerization of isoprene, methyl methacrylate, hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, and phenyl isocyanate with the use of toluene and tetrahydrofuran as solvents. The products were examined by gel-permeation chromatography for evidence of homopolymerization and graft polymerization. The composition of the graft copolymers was determined by NMR, and for isoprene and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, termination by trialkylchlorosilanes enabled chain lengths to be determined by NMR. The use of toluene gave rise to some homopolymerization, but with tetrahydrofuran, only hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane gave homopolymer. In all cases, graft copolymers were formed. With isoprene and methyl methacrylate, soluble graft copolymers were formed in good yield. In the former case approximately 60% 3,4 and 40% 1,4 addition was found. In the latter case 1,1-diphenylethylene was used to reduce crosslinking, in its absence, methyl methacrylate gave only crosslinked gels in tetrahydrofuran. Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane added only one molecule per lithium on the polymer, the remainder giving homopolymer. Phenyl isocyanate gave some soluble graft copolymer in toluene, but only crosslinked products were obtained when tetrahydrofuran was used as reaction solvent.

    Notes: Styrene has been grafted onto poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (I) with the use of lithiated I as an initiator. In benzene solution, solvent metalation resulted in some polystyrene homopolymer. In tetrahydrofuran, however, only graft copolymer was formed. By forming a derivative with trimethylchlorosilane and examining by NMR, it was possible to establish the proportion of lithium scavenged by impurities, the amount of polymeric lithium which reacted with styrene, and the amount which did not. The chain length of the grafted polystyrene was also calculated. No crosslinking was found, except where a high ratio of lithium to styrene resulted in some unreacted ring-metalated polymer. In this case only, reaction with trimethylchlorosilane causes some crosslinking.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé La proportion Sr/Ca dans l'os est à peu près la même que dans le sérum tandis que les poudres d'hydroxyapatite suspendues dans des solution physiologiques font une distinction contre le strontium. On trouva que la proportion Sr/Ca des fractions de différentes densités d'os compact de tibia de rat en forme de poudre augmentait avec augmentation de la densité jusqu'à une valeur un peu supérieure à celle observée dans le sérum. L'explication pourrait être qu'une barrière cellulaire ôte le calcium par préférence au strontium du fluide d'os ou bien qu'une accentuation précoce de la proportion Sr/Ca dans l'os se réfléchit dans les fractions de densité supérieure.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Das Verhältnis Sr/Ca im Knochen ist annähernd dasselbe wie es im Serum vorliegt, während in einer physiologischen Lösung von pulverisiertem Hydroxyapatit das Sr zugunsten des Ca benachteiligt wird. Es wurde festgestellt, daß das Sr/Ca-Verhältnis von Fraktionen verschiedener Dichte von pulverisierten Rattentibiae mit zunehmender Dichte anstieg, und zwar bis zu einem Wert, der etwas höher lag als der im Serum beobachtete. Dies ließe sich so erklären, daß eine Zellbarriere beim Entzug aus der Knochenflüssigkeit Ca dem Sr vorzieht; oder aber daß sich eine frühzeitige Betonung des für den Knochen typischen Sr/Ca-Verhältnisses in den Fraktionen höherer Dichte widerspiegelt.
    Notes: Abstract The Sr/Ca ration in bone is approximately the same as in serum, whereas hydroxyapatite powders suspended in physiological solutions discriminate against strontium. It was found that the Sr/Ca ratio of various density fractions of powdered compact bone of rat tibia increased with increasing density to a value slightly higher than that observed in the serum. The explanation could be that a cellular barrier removes calcium preferentially to strontium from the bone fluid, or that early accentuation of the bone Sr/Ca ration is reflected in the higher density fractions.

    Notes: Investigations have been made on the optical rotatory dispersion properties of E. coli ribosomes and their constituent RNA and proteins. The results indicate that (1) no conformational changes are involved in the formation of a 70S particle from the 50S and 308 subunits, (2) the E. coli ribosomal proteins are similar to most globular proteins with little α-helix content, and (3) the conformation of RNA and proteins inside the ribosome is very similar to that in the free state.
