Notes: Abstract During the past two decades, the information explosion has led to a demand for systems of storing and retrieving information in every branch of science and technology. A number of the larger abstracting services are already experimenting with systems covering so great an area that the use of a computer is essential. Since, however, the, field of rheology is relatively small a simple classification and retrieval system is being developed, for use inRheology Abstracts, based upon ordinary 132-hole edge-punched cards. The first half of the system deals with the rheology of fluids and is already in use; it is described in detail in a recent paper (1). The second half, dealing with the rheology of solids, is still being developed. In the fluids system, holes are punched to indicate the following essential features of a paper: general nature; language; type of fluid; rheological properties; type of flow; boundary conditions; important variables and effects; theoretical treatment; type of apparatus; industrial processes involved. As a result two simple hand operations will serve to retrieve, for example, all the papers concerned with turbulent flow of suspensions, or with fracture in polymer melts. Additional operations lead to a narrower, more precise, retrieval. At present the classifying is being done by abstractors. It is hoped that authors will become familiar with the system and will make a practice of classifying their own papers; this would lead to more accurate classification and to the benefit of all concerned.

Notes: Abstract Following surveys of pea moth damage and to improve the effect of control measures, spray warnings based on the date of moth emergence and egg laying have been introduced in East Anglia. Each year since 1959 regular visits have been made to fields previously under peas to determine the date of moth emergence. Plant samples were also collected from fields of early sown peas and these were examined for eggs. Spray warnings were issued when eggs were found on about half the fields sampled. Details are given of a method of forecasting levels of attack based on the relationship between “peak” egg numbers and pod infestation at harvesting. Other biological observations made include data on the distribution of eggs on pea plants.

Notes: Abstract Student bronchial asthma at the University of Minnesota was studied in grain sensitive and in control groups to find the influence of air pollutants from nearby grain installations on this problem.Under relatively high dust conditions it was observed that grain sensitive students had a two-fold increase in asthma attacks while the controls showed no significant changes. A combined association of wind direction and relatively high dust conditions with asthma gave a correlation of higher significance in the grain sensitive group. Multiple associations indicated that this relationship is only weakly affected by seasonal and temperature changes. It was also observed that relative humidity conditions may significantly influence the effectiveness of the dust exposure in sensitive students. Weather parameters showed no association with asthma in the control group.
