Summary 1. It has been shown that Apiezon L, M, and N greases are hydrocarbon greases of similar properties, differing only in kinematic viscosities, molecular weights, hydroxyl numbers, and volatilities at elevated temperatures. 2. The high stability to thermal oxidation of Apiezon greases arises from the presence of an appreciable quantity of aromatic hydrocarbons (mainly mono- and bicyclics). 3. The good adhesion of Apiezon greases is explained by the presence of a polymeric additive of the polyisoprene-rubber type.
