Notes: British financial interests in China, since 1895, had been closely linked with political and strategic considerations. As the political and financial rivalry between the European powers intensified, the link tightened, becoming increasingly essential for mutual preservation. European finance meant railways, mineral rights, arms, and support for the ailing Manchu Dynasty; it was clear to successive British governments that British political supremacy in China could not survive the passing of such important financial concessions into foreign hands. In 1898, with the international scramble for concessions at its peak, the leading representatives of British finance in China co-operated fully with the Foreign Office to gain the bulk of Chinese railway contracts and concessions. Such respectable British enterprises as the British and Chinese Corporation and the Pekin Syndicate received active diplomatic support at Peking and the encouragement of the Foreign Office in London. Short of actually negotiating financial contracts on behalf of private companies British diplomacy could do little more to improve the competitive standing of these leading British firms vis-à-vis their foreign rivals.

Notes: Abstract Observations of bi-polar type I storm centers with the Culgoora radioheliograph operating at 80 MHz show that in many cases they are not oriented as we should expect for emission in the ordinary mode and for the simplest magnetic field geometry. We interpret this as evidence for a twist in the magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract A search for linear polarization showing the effect of Faraday rotation has been made at 80 MHz in type III solar radio bursts. A novel autocorrelation technique was employed. The results were entirely negative, contrary to what was expected on the ground of earlier, less sophisticated experiments. However, there are convincing theoretical reasons why no linear polarization should be expected.

Notes: [Auszug] Our work was stimulated by an extraordinary pulsating event recorded with the Culgoora radiospectrograph on September 27, 1969 (Fig. 1). A remarkably regular series of about 50 sharp pulses were received in the frequency range 100 to 200 MHz, each pulse occurring almost simultaneously throughout ...

Notes: Abstract The metre-wave observations presented here of a damped train of regular pulses from the Sun appear much simpler than other similar events previously described. The interpretations so far proposed for such phenomena do not adequately explain the asymmetry observed in this case.

Notes: Abstract The case is considered of an aligned composite subjected to tensile creep in the direction of the fibres. A geometrical argument shows that shear strain in the composite is amplified l/2s times compared with unsupported matrix, where l/2s ∼ aspect ratio of the inter-fibre spaces. The shear stress is amplified (l/2s)1/n times, where n is the exponent in the matrix creep law. Consequently the rate of energy expenditure is amplified V m(1/2s)1+1/n times, as is therefore the tensile flow resistance of the composite (V m is the volume fraction of matrix). The potential increase in flow resistance is thus enormous. However, the fibre end-stress, which is calculated, ∝ fibre diameter, and may be large enough to initiate rupture unless the fibres are very thin (e.g. 1 μm diameter). The tensile load is roughly equally divided between matrix and fibres irrespective of volume fractions.
