Notes: In the management of British grassland lay there appears to be a marked divergence between the policies advocated by grassland science and general grassland practice. While science places emphasis on monocultures of sown species (mainly perennial ryegrass), heavily fertilized and intensively stocked, grassland farmers for the most part rely on lonstablished or indigenous swards composed of a variety of species and receiving modest applications of fertilizer. Since the gap between the two approaches is both substantial and of long duration the subject appears to be worth fresh attention. The purpose of this paper is to examine the current situation in relation to improvement in botanical composition and to suggest new approaches to that end.

Notes: The results are reported of the effects of fertilizer and grazing or cutting for hay over a period of 6 years on the composition of an Agrostis/Festuca permanent pasture on low-lying land at Beghroke Hill. Applications of N up to 264 units/ac each year associated with frequent defoliation every 21 days produced only small changes in sward composition; Agrostis spp. declined and Poa trivialis increased. Lolium perenne did not increase from a small initial presence. Records of animal performance and hay yield showed that the mean output from the experiment as a whole was 530 Ib liveweight gain/ac and 0·5 ton hay/ac.

Notes: Brown trout of similar length and weight were fed a standard meal which contained a known number of food organisms of the same size-group and taxon (seven taxa were used). The weight of digestible organic matter in a trout stomach decreased exponentially with time. i.e. at a constant relative rate. At a particular water temperature, the food organisms were either evacuated from the stomach at similar rates (Group 1: Gammarus pulex, Baetis rhodani, Chironomidae, Oligochaetes) or at progressively slower rates (Group 2: Protonemura meyeri, Hydropsyche spp., Tenebrio molitor). Rates of gastric evacuation were not significantly different for food organisms of different size groups of the same taxon, or for different sized meals, or for different sizes of trout (range 20–30 cm), or for mixed and multiple meals (three meals over 16 h). Times are given for the gastric evacuation of 50%, 75%, 90% and 99% of the digestible organic matter in a meal. Starvation periods of 1, 2, 3,4 and 5 days prior to feeding did not affect evacuation rates. The rates were slightly, but not significantly, slower for starvation periods of 6 and 7 days, and were often significantly slower for starvation periods of 10, 15 and 20 days. Evacuation rates increased exponentially with increasing water temperature. It was possible to estimate both the rate and time for the gastric evacuation of different meals at water temperatures between 3–8°C and 19·1°C.

Notes: Diel changes in the stomach contents of 0+, 1 + and 2+ or older trout were compared with diel changes in invertebrate drift. Peaks in mean numbers and biomass of invertebrates per fish stomach occurred in the midday (10.00 to 14.00 h) and evening (18.00 to 22.00 h) samples. The major peak was usually in the evening sample, but the major peak in biomass was in the midday sample for 2+ fish. There was a good correlation between diel changes of benthic invertebrates in the diet and drift, with the major peak in the evening. A similar relationship did not always exist for emerging and terrestrial invertebrates. Known non-drifting benthic invertebrates (e.g. large caddis larvae) were excluded from the comparisons, and were only taken by 2+ or older trout in which they contributed a large biomass to the day food.

Notes: Abstract Three new sample preparation methods other than the method suggested in B.S. 1924: 1967 are utilised for the determination of the cement content of cement-stabilised tropical soils with a view to i) reducing the quantity of acid digested, ii) making unnecessary the use of ball mill crushers, and iii) reducing the preparation time. Statistical analyses of the results obtained indicate that the above advantages can indeed be realised and recommendations are made accordingly.

Notes: Abstract The hydroxyl stretching mode in hydroxyapatite occurs as a single absorption band in the infra-red spectrum at 3570 cm−1. When there is approximately 10% replacement of hydroxyl ions by chloride ions, an extra band appears at 3498 cm−1 which is assigned to hydroxyl ions forming weak hydrogen bonds with adjacent chloride ions. A similar extra band appears at 3545 cm−1 in the infra-red spectrum of a synthetic fluor-hydroxyapatite. Mineral Holly Springs hydroxyapatite contains fluorine and was also found to contain chlorine. The infra-red spectrum showed, in addition to the unperturbed hydroxyl stretching mode at 3570 cm−1, two sharp bands at 3543 cm−1 and 3498 cm−1 which are assigned to hydroxyl ions hydrogen-bonded with fluorine and chlorine respectively. The infra-red spectrum of human enamel, which is known to contain about 0.3% by weight of chlorine shows a weak band at 3500 cm−1 and it is proposed that this is due to chloride ions present in the apatite lattice.
