Description: Advanced technology studies have indicated a major payload/range improvement for the next generation supersonic transport while meeting stringent environmental requirements. The major technology advance is the variable-cycle engine. When integrated with efficient aerodynamic and structural concepts, the variable-cycle engine airplane will attain a design range of 5500 nautical miles with no penalty for take-off noise or subsonic missions. The goal - not achievable in past programs - will allow one airplane to compete subsonic in over-land sonic boom prohibited areas as well as over-water supersonic routes. This goal will not be achieved without an aggressive technology development program.

Description: The performance of hydrogen-fueled commercial aircraft is examined in the subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic speed regime and compared with JP-fueled systems. Hydrogen aircraft are shown to provide substantial improvements in range and payload fraction as well as to minimize or eliminate many environmental problems. The major elements of a development program required to make hydrogen-fueled aircraft a commercial reality are also outlined and the rationale for and characteristics of both a subsonic demonstrator and a high speed research airplane are described.
