Description: Analysis of recent spectra of alpha Ori in the 3 to 4 micron region at a resolving power of about 10,000, showing clear evidence of the delta v = 1 sequence of the rotation-vibration bands of OH. A detailed investigation of the rotational and vibrational populations suggests that the OH is close to being in LTE at an apparent temperature of 4100 plus or minus 200 K. An OH abundance of 1.2 x 10 to the 20th molecules per cu cm and upper limits for H2O and H super 35 Cl of 8 x 10 to the 18th and 8 x 10 to the 17th molecules per cu cm, respectively, are deduced. It is also deduced that the rms turbulence velocity in the region of OH line formation is 11.5 plus or minus 2 km/sec. The implications of these data on abundances in M supergiant atmospheres are discussed.

Description: Evidence for the presence of thallium in the sun is presented. Umbral spectra were found to contain an absorption feature at or near the predicted position for the Tl I 5350 A line. Analysis of the 5350 A line indicated that the solar thallium abundance is given by log N(Tl) values ranging from 0.72 to 1.07 on the standard scale log N(H) = 12.00. Unidentified blends, however, limit the accuracy of the abundance determination.

Description: A review is presented of the three basic types of pulsed radar altimeter designs, as well as the source and form of altitude bias errors arising from antenna/satellite attitude errors in each design type. A quantitative comparison of the three systems was also made.

Description: Results are presented for photoelectric scans of the C sub 2 1 to 0 band head at 4737 A at resolutions of 0.14 to 0.50 A in the comet Kohoutek. On the basis of medium-resolution scans and of one high-resolution scan two values are obtained for the C-12/C-13 ratio which are consistent within the experimental errors with the terrestrial values of C-12/C-13 equal to 89. The study also demonstrates the limitations imposed by NH2 blends.

Description: A structural evaluation to establish probable failure limits and a series of environmental tests involving temperature cycling, sustained acceleration, and vibration were conducted on an 18-inch diameter solid rocket motor. Despite the fact that thermal, acceleration and vibration loads representing a severe overtest of conventional environmental requirements were imposed on the sterilizable motor, no structural failure of the grain or flexible support system was detected. The following significant conclusions are considered justified. It is concluded that: (1) the flexible grain retention system, which permitted heat sterilization at 275 F on the test motor, can readily be adopted to meet the environmental requirements of an operational motor design, and (2) if further substantiation of structural integrity is desired, the motor used is considered acceptable for static firing.

Description: Optical absorption in an electric field has been of increased interest in recent years since Callaway predicted that the Wannier levels may be observable in direct-transition semiconductors such as GaAs. In this work, such levels have been observed for the first time and found to be in substantial agreement with the Callaway theory.

Description: Theoretical formulation of noise radiation from thin, rectangular, flexible plates excited by turbulent wall pressure fluctuations. An extensive parametric study including surface roughness and both plate and flow parameters is presented. From the results, presented graphically, it is possible to predict the spectrum of the total radiated power provided that the power spectral density of the wall-pressure fluctuations, the flow velocity, the plate dimensions and the plate modal damping parameters are known. Along with the parametric study, an estimate of the dependence of the noise radiation on plate boundary conditions based on a consideration of the wavenumber-frequency selectivity of the plate is presented. The parametric study is based on the assumption that the wave number/frequency spectrum of the wall-pressure fluctuations can be described by a Fourier transform of a Corcos model of the cross spectral density. The results indicate that at frequencies above the hydrodynamic-coincidence frequency the radiated power is dependent on the low-wave-number spectrum of the excitation. The dependence on the high-wave-number spectrum, however, is limited to a narrow band of frequencies below the hydrodynamic-coincidence frequency.

Description: Two independent models simulate dynamic and steady-state responses of electrical and electronic equipment under power load. One is resistance/capacitance/inductance network, and the other is variable resistance analog device. Resistance, inductance, and/or capacitance are selected by iterative process; time-domain response is compared with that of real equipment to select optimal values.

Description: Technical emphasis was placed on characterization of a scaled-up batch of the improved propellant formulation and determination of the effects of dry heat sterilization on propellant integrity and structural response. The grain stress analysis was directed toward tailoring a fully-bonded grain to the calculated propellant allowable stresses and investigating various bond release concepts to relieve stresses incurred in thermal shrinkage following sterilization.
