Description: The effects of multiple anisotropic scattering were calculated, including the solar penumbra effect for shadowing computations. The classical model was matched to observations, including the wavelength dependence, by varying the particle albedo as a function of wavelength. A scattering diagram is also presented showing the relative amount of primary and higher-order scattering necessary to match the B ring brightness and the shape of the phase curve.

Description: A search was conducted for the three 9-cm transitions of the ground state Lambda-doublet of CH in comet Kohoutek, using the CSIRO 64-m radio telescope and the Onsala Space Observatory's 25.6-m telescope. No lines were detected during the observing periods, and upper limits are given for the corresponding antenna temperatures.

Description: Knowledge of the probability distribution of photon path lengths for diffuse reflection in the continuum from a planetary atmosphere greatly simplifies computation of the shape and strength of absorption lines formed under conditions of multiple scattering. Graphs of this probability distribution are presented for diffuse reflection from a semiinfinite conservative atmosphere for both isotropic and forward-directed scattering, and for several angles of incidence and reflection. Graphs showing distributions for the case of absorption in the continuum are also discussed. The distributions are obtained from an analytic expression for the path-length distribution for nth-order scattering and a tabulation of nth-order intensities. It is found that te shape of the probability distribution depends markedly on the degree of forward scattering due to the phase function. The results are compared with those obtained by a Monte Carlo computation of the sort which might be used if tabulated nth-order intensities were not available.

Description: The spectral reflectivity of Saturn's rings between 0.36 and 1.06 microns is derived from observations of the combined light of the Saturn system and the previously determined spectrum of the disk of Saturn. The rings are red relative to the Sun for wavelengths below 0.7 micron; at longer wavelengths, the spectral reflectivity declines. The amplitude of the opposition effect (anomalous brightening at very small phase angles) shows a maximum at both ends of our spectral range.

Description: From a comparison of the spectra of CH and other molecules toward the continuum source Cas A and four dark clouds, the ground state transition frequencies of CH have been determined and are reported. The relative errors in these frequencies are about twice as small as those obtained earlier by radio astronomical methods for the two main lines of ground state OH.

Description: Definitions are provided of the basic concepts occurring in the solution of multiple scattering problems involving planetary atmospheres and attention is given to aspects of problem characterization. Approaches are considered for finding the answer to a particular problem without the performance of detailed calculations. The characteristics of albedos are investigated, taking into account semiinfinite atmospheres and finite atmospheres. Questions of surface illumination are discussed along with aspects related to energy deposition in the atmosphere, intensity, and polarization. Precise numerical methods are examined and analytical solutions are presented.

Description: A theoretical model of Saturn's rings is investigated which includes the shadowing effect and realistic anisotropic phase functions for the ring particles. The effects of multiple scattering and the finite size of the sun, including the penumbra, are rigorously included. The permissible range of the relevant parameters, including optical thickness, single scattering albedo, volume density, and phase function are investigated by comparing the theoretical results to observations of the ring brightness vs phase angle, wavelength, and elevation of the sun and earth. Anisotropic scattering by the ring particles is necessary in order to match the observations. The color dependence of the opposition effect is interpreted in terms of the albedo spectrum of the ring particles.
