    Notizen: The pharynx, intestine and respiratory duct of Xenopus laevis were examined by light and electron microscopy, at different stages of the metamorphic cycle, through climax.It is well known that preclimactic larvae are suspension feeders and that after climax specimens feed on solid food. It is shown that the histology of the pharynx and the alimentary canal changes in adaptation to the change in the mode of feeding.Suspension feeding utilises ciliary activity but after climax cilia have disappeared from the pharynx and alimentary canal, when new neuromuscular mechanisms are utilised in feeding.Other morpho-histological changes in various intestinal and respiratory tissues are likewise considered in terms of functional activity.

    Notizen: A series of 100 experiments was completed to determine if DNA is capable of transforming the genotype of a murine lymphoma (P388) in cell culture. The test system was concerned with the transformation of cells from 8-azaguanine (AZG) sensitivity to resistance. By the use of this marker, it was determined that transformation by DNA did occur, and that the efficiency of transformation was greatly increased by sonication of the DNA. A statistical analysis of 100 experiments demonstrated that the increase in the number of resistant cells after treatment with sonicated resistant DNA (R-DNA) was statistically significant (χ2 〉 4.25, 0.05 〉 p 〉 0.02) in 66% of the experiments. DNA from sensitive parental cells and DNA from other sources produced no effect while DNase and UV treatment abrogated effective transformation by either sonicated or nonsonicated R-DNA. RNase was without effect.Sucrose gradient analysis of sonicated and nonsonicated R-DNA demonstrated that the peaks which correspond to the highest specific transforming activity are not altered by sonication and do not coincide with the OD260 peaks, in spite of the fact that sonication shifted the peak of maximum OD260 to a slower sedimenting region of the gradient. The major portion, however, of the transforming material did shift after sonication to the slower sedimenting region of the gradient and did coincide with the OD260 peak.The hereditary stability of the transformed cells was established by cloning a representative number of transformants, growing them in the absence of AZG for an extended period and then testing their ability to grow in graded concentrations of AZG. In addition, DNA extracted from transformants successfully transformed sensitive cells.

    Notizen: Four pure hydroperoxides were evaluated as initiators for the polymerization of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at 5°C. These materials were the meta and para isomers of mono- and dihydroperoxy-diisopropylbenzene. Results showed that the monohydroperoxides produced somewhat faster reactions than a control hydroperoxide, p-menthane hydroperoxide. Response to mercaptan level adjustments was good, providing polymer with a Mooney viscosity in the 50 to 60 range. The reaction rate with the dihydroperoxides was slower, but again provided polymer with a satisfactory viscosity. Basic physical property measurements on polymers prepared with the pure hydroperoxides or control hydroperoxides showed only minor differences. It is anticipated that these differences can be eliminated by small adjustments in the compound recipe.

    Notizen: Synthesis of the first totally organic spiro polymer was accomplished by the reaction of 1,4-cyclohexanedione and pentaerythritol in benzene plus a trace of p-toluenesulfonic acid to produce the polyspiroketal. The polymer did not melt, but began to decompose at 350°C. Although it was insoluble in most common solvents, it was found to be soluble in hexafluoroisopropanol. The x-ray diffraction indicated the polymer was very highly crystalline. A series of lower molecular weight related polymers were prepared by carrying out a similar condensation with a mixture of 1,4-cyclohexanedione containing 5-50 mole-% of cyclohexanone. In order to prepare a material with greater solubility, a polyspiroketal was prepared from 1,10-cyclooctadecanedione plus pentaerythritol. This polymer was soluble not only in hexafluoroisopropanol, but to a limited extent in dimethyl sulfoxide.

    Notizen: The mechanism of the benzophenone-photosensitized degradation of films of poly-(vinyl chloride) was studied, both under vacuum and in the presence of oxygen. Initial rapid increases in absorption in the 340 nm region strongly implicate the ketyl radical in the initiation process which involves the abstraction by triplet benzophenone of a methylenic hydrogen from poly(vinyl chloride). Dehydrochlorination then occurs by a chain mechanism, and the conjugated polyene structure produced photosensitizes further initiation and, in the presence of oxygen, photo-oxidation of the polymer.

    Notizen: Aminolysis of a random copolymer of styrene and n-butyl methacrylate (2.54:1.00 mole ratio) with 6-aminohexanol has been studied. Kinetics were determined by covalently dyeing the functional polymer and spectrally measuring dye content. In the presence of 1,4-diaza[2,2,2]bicyclooctane (DABCO), an activation energy of 22.2 ± 1.0 kcal/mole was calculated from the temperature dependence of the overall rate of reaction. The rate is independent of solvent polarity. The rate at 189°C is 2.1-fold slower than that of poly(n-butyl methacrylate). The phenyl group of the styryl moiety inhibits the reaction, apparently via a steric effect. This aminolysis technique affords noncrosslinked (similar M̄n and M̄w) functional polymers. By a similar process an aminediol and an alcohol which contained a secondary and a primary amino group also yielded noncrosslinked functionalized polymers.
