Notes: Two methods are presented for the automatic selection of a cycle basis leading to a sparse flexibility matrix for the analysis of rigid-jointed skeletal structures. The first method having a local approach forms a maximal set of admissible minimal cycles, while the second having a global approach constructs admissible minimal cycles on the ordered chords of a shortest route tree. A cycle ordering algorithm is also given to reduce the band width of the corresponding flexibility matrix.

Notes: The visco-plastic model of material behaviour is of much practical interest in its own right and initial strain techniques for its solution have been developed and proved efficient. More important however is the fact that the visco-plastic model can be used to generate plasticity solutions in a simple manner when stationary conditions are reached and, at the other extreme, can reproduce standard creep phenomena. Used in this sense it allows the treatment of non-associated plasticity and strain softening situations which present difficulties in conventional plasticity approaches. A standard programme thus allows the treatment of a wide range of materially non-linear problems. The paper discusses various applications of the new general formulation and introduces certain numerical information on solution stability.

Notes: Several iterative processes for solving elasto-plastic problems are discussed in the context of a general formulation which includes: 1Associated and non-associated plasticity relations.2Strain hardening as well as strain softening behaviour.Advantages of the ‘initial stress’ process are emphasized for a wide category of problems and the isoparametric formulation is used throughout.

Notes: The transient field problem of the type encountered in heat conduction problems is formulated in terms of the finite element process using the Galerkin approach. Curved two-dimensional and three-dimensional, isoparametric elements are used in a time-stepping solution and their advantages illustrated by means of several examples.

Notes: This paper presents a labour-saving method of discretizing irregular and inhomogeneous two-dimensional continua into triangular elements. The method uses a magnetic pen to record node point data and a computer program to generate element data. This technique eliminates the tedium in the manual generation of data and the delay due to mistakes which would otherwise arise frequently for a complex mesh.

Notes: A solution has been formulated, which allows one to analyse all the major performance characteristics in a chain of impacting elastic ‘rods’. By allowing one end of the elastic chain to impact against a surface which resists penetration according to a specified penetration law it is possible to analyse the impact system of a variety of mechanical devices such as percussive tools and squeeze film dampers. Virtually, unlimited variety in the number and geometry of the impacting rods, and virtually unlimited complexity in the form of the reaction of the terminal face is permitted. A computer program for treating one or two elastic rods has been developed. The program prints out all important stresses as well as the stress history at several selected points. It also prints out the depth of penetration, the energy transferred from rod to rod, the overall energy transfer into the receiver, rebound velocities and times of separation between rods and between rod and 4receiver. Agreement with exact solutions and experiments is demonstrated.

Notes: Basic equations are derived for a comprehensive computer analysis for an equivalent lumped parameter system which simulates a pre-twisted, rotating or non-rotating. Timoshenko beam in coupled bending-bending-torsion vibrations. These equations enable one to develop straightforwardly digital computer programs for studying vibration problems related to compressor or turbine blades in turbomachinery as well as in other structural dynamics applications. The validity of the lumped parameter approach is established through a free vibration study. Good agreement between the present computer results and those obtained theoretically or experimentally by other investigators is demonstrated. In particular, it is found that the natural frequencies obtained in the free vibration study for all beams examined converge from below the exact values at a convergence rate of N-4, where N is the total number of the lumped parameters used in the computer simulation. The rapid rate of convergence shows that the mathematical model used in deriving the basic equations can adequately represent the type of beams under consideration. The known convergence rate also provides an estimate on the accuracy of the computer results, and a means to improve these results by extrapolation.

Notes: Using the finite element method, a detailed study of the deformations and stresses produced in an elastic-perfectly plastic half-space indented by a rigid sphere was done. The analysis covers the transition region from the maximum elastic contact load to a state where this load has been increased one hundredfold. Experimental results available in the literature are in good agreement with the analysis. In solving repeatedly the large number of linear equations involved in the solution of the problem, it was found profitable, in order to save computer time, to modify the direct elimination method. This technique is described in some details in the paper.

Notes: A procedure for the acceleration of convergence in non-linear analysis using the modified Newton-Raphson problem is described. The process has been found useful in plasticity and large deformation studies and its application elsewhere can be envisaged.
