    Notes: The exotherm for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate was monitored by a simple thermal technique to gain useful information about the effect of several factors on the polymerization rate and the degree of completion. All reactions were begun at room temperature (24°C) and no external heating was provided. Initiation was by decomposition of benzoyl peroxide (and mixtures with lauroyl peroxide) catalyzed by the accelerator N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Specific factors examined were peroxide and accelerator levels, sample size, peroxide combinations, and crosslinking agents. The results are discussed in terms of the stoichiometry of the initiator system; the balance of heat generation, heat capacity, and heat loss; and the autoacceleration effect.

    Notes: Relative reactivity ratios have been determined for o-chlorostyrene with five lower acrylates and methacrylates, respectively, and for methyl acrylate with a number of substituted styrenes in free-radical copolymerization. Analysis of the data shows that: (a) acrylates are less reactive than methacrylates with o-chlorostyrene; (b) length of the side chain has little or no effect in methacrylates, but its effect is pronounced in acrylates with respect to their reactivity ratios; (c) chlorine substitution in the side chain of either acrylates or methacrylates has a significant influence on the reactivity ratio; (d) relative reactivity ratio data for methyl acrylate with substituted styrenes fail to show the expected relationship between monomer structure and resonance theory, inductive effect and, consequently, the Hammett σ values.

    Description: A survey of the principal water resource users was conducted to determine the impact of new remote data streams on hydrologic computer models. The analysis of the responses and direct contact demonstrated that: (1) the majority of water resource effort of the type suitable to remote sensing inputs is conducted by major federal water resources agencies or through federally stimulated research, (2) the federal government develops most of the hydrologic models used in this effort; and (3) federal computer power is extensive. The computers, computer power, and hydrologic models in current use were determined.
