Notes: The use of surface tension measurements is proposed as a simple method for the determination of copolymerization ratios. The procedure depends on the parachor of the copolymer in the liquid state (∏), which is defined by ∏ = ∏s + ∏0(wp/ws)(Ms/M0) for solutions and ∏ = [DP]∏0 for liquid or molten polymers, where ∏s is the parachor of the solvent of molecular weight Ms; wp and ws are the weights of the polymer and solvent in solution; while ∏0 and M0 are the parachor and molecular weight of the repeating unit of the copolymer, respectively. The validity of this relationship is demonstrated by analysis of the surface tension properties of liquid silicone polymers, polystyrene-Decalin solutions, and molten polymers as well as by the calculation of the composition of some characterized tetrahydrofuran-propylene oxide copolymers. The application of surface tension measurement is also suggested as a means of estimating the degree of chain branching in a polymer.

Description / Table of Contents: New Sesquiterpenoids of the Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea L.)Two chemical races occur with Glechoma hederacea: The so-called Glechomafuran (1) is responsible for the chromogenous behaviour of one race. The race which does not respond to EP-reagent contains the so-called Glechomanolid (2). The isolation and elucidation of structure of these two characteristic sesquiterpenoids are described and the chemical relations shown. 1 is located in the young glandular hairs of the leaves and disappears with the increasing age of the leaf (figure 6).

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of 4-Hydroxynaphtho[l,2-c]- and 3-oxoindeno[2,3-c]isocoumarinsThe syntheses of naphtho- and indenoisocoumarins and the lactam derivative of the former are described. Duro and Condorelli′s method4) for the synthesis of isocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid has been extensively studied and extended to the synthesis of 4-arylisocoumarin-3-carb-oxylic acid.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Lichtstreuung von Akazien-Catechu-Säure (ACA) in wäßrig-äthanolischen Lösungen (mit 0,02 mol/l.
Notes: The light scattering properties of Acacia Catechuic Acid (ACA) was studied in aqueous mixture of ethanol containing 0.02 mole/l. KCl. There was hardly any effect upto 25% alcohol, above which the molecular weight appeared to increase gradually till 50% alcohol in the mixture and at 55% there was precipitation of the acid. The root mean square end-to-end distance remained almost unaffected at lower concentration and reached a minimum value at about 25% (3052 Å) beyond which there was considerable increase reaching up to a maximum limit of 3597 Å at 50% (as against 3270 Å in water). This interesting behaviour of ACA in the above mentioned system could be explained in the light of the FLORY-FOX equation in conjunction with association of molecules by their hydrophobic groups which was favoured by addition of alcohol. Alcohol, however, at low concentrations did not appear to affect the character of the solvent to a great degree but beyond about 25%, the solvent behaved as a poor one.
