Description: The use of NASA high altitude aerial photography of south eastern Arizona to develop a natural resources information system for Federal lands is discussed. The data are to be used by local, State, and Federal agencies in connection with geologic mapping projects, water resources investigations, and land use studies to determine the alignment of a proposed major aqueduct. In addition, the data are used to confirm land ownership boundaries, detect changes in land use, and legislative reappointment mapping. Other applications include mapping vegetive cover, evaluation of changes in wildlife habitat, location of deer kills, and as a base for recording telemetry data from radio-collared big game animals.

Description: The Verde River watershed in central Arizona furnishes municipal, industrial, and agricultural water to the Salt River Valley --an area that contains more than half of Arizona's population and about one-fourth of the State's irrigated land. Water-management decisions related to the operation of large multiple-use reservoirs require accurate and continuous monitoring of moisture conditions over large remote areas. The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Salt River Valley Water Users' Association installed a specially designed gaging station on the Verde River near the town of Camp Verde to evaluate near-real time streamflow data furnished by the ERTS-1 Data Collection System (DCS). On Nov. 3, 1972, the installation was equipped with a Stevens digital water-level recorder, modified for telemetry, and an ERTS-1 data collection platform operating in the digital-parallel mode.

Description: The Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) Data Collection System (DCS) was used to relay hydrologic data (streamflow rates, precipitation amounts, soil and air temperature, and snow-moisture content) from remote sites in central Arizona to those responsible for reservoir management. The ERTS-DCS was utilized to furnish near-real time information on snow-moisture content and streamflow rates to the Salt River Project for use in the management and operation of reservoirs on the Salt and Verde Rivers. The Salt River Project, aided by near-real time hydrologic data furnished by both microwave and ERTS-telemetry, was successful in predicting the volume of runoff into the reservoirs. Serious flooding in the downstream Phoenix metropolitan area was prevented by prudent water management.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. The DCS water-stage data from the USGS streamflow gaging station on the Verde River near Camp Verde furnished information sufficient for the accurate computation of daily mean streamflow rates during the first 2 months of operation. Daily mean flow rates computed from the DCS data agreed with those computed from the digital recorder data within + or - 5% during periods of stable or slowly changing flow and within + or - 10% during periods of rapidly changing high flow. The SRP was furnished near-real time DCS information on snow moisture content and streamflow rates for use in the management and operation of the multiple-use reservoir system. The SRP, by prudent water management and the use of near-real time hydrologic data furnished by microwave and ERTS DCS telemetry, was successful in anticipating the amount of flow into the Salt and Verde Rivers and in the subsequent release of water at rates that did not create flooding in metropolitan Phoenix. Only minor flooding occurred along the Gila River west of Phoenix. According to the Maricopa County Civil Defense agency, wage and salary losses of about $11,400,000 resulted from closing of roads across the Salt River in the winter and spring of 1972-73; however, the number and duration of the closing were minimized by use of DCS data.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. Preliminary analysis of DCS data from the USGS Verde River stream flow measuring site indicates the DCS system is furnishing high quality data more frequently than had been expected. During the 43-day period between Nov. 3, and Dec. 15, 1972, 552 DCS transmissions were received during 193 data passes. The amount of data received far exceeded the single high quality transmission per 12-hour period expected from the DCS system. The digital-parallel ERTS-1 data has furnished sufficient to accurately compute mean daily gage heights. These in turn, are used to compute average daily streamflow rates during periods of stable or slowly changing flow conditions. The digital-parallel data has also furnished useful information during peak flow periods. However, the serial-digital DCS capability, currently under development for transmitting streamflow data, should provide data of greater utility for determining times of flood peaks.

Description / Table of Contents: Russian Abstract.
Abstract: By considering the melt polycondensation of polyethylene terephthalate as an example, the overall reaction rate is shown to be determined by expelling the glycol formed in the reaction. The investigations performed are limited to the first stage of the polycondensation process, the pre-condensation, in which the turbulence caused by the given off glycol is comparatively high. In a reactor having only stationary internal parts the polycondensation process of PETP was traced by volumetric measurement of the glycol given off. Besides the layer thickness, the pressure was varied between 40 and 100 Torr. In some experiments up to 10 l/h nitrogen was injected for more intimate mixing and nucleation. In evaluating the kinetic equations the order of the overall reaction was found to vary between about 2 and 7.5, depending on the turbulence in the system. These high values suggest the overall rate of reaction to depend on the mass transport of the glycol evolved. The validity of this suggestion was investigated by a double layer method base on some simplified assumptions. In analogy to the determination of the SHERWOOD number the expression F. β = C. Re′m, with Re′ as modified REYNOLDS number to the power m, F area of the phase interface and β mass transfer coefficient, was used. While the values of the chemical mechanism, as expressed in the order of the rate constant, are subject to extremely high variation, the values of C and particularly those of the REYNOLDS index m keep fairly close to one another. This leads to results allowing to describe the precondensation within the variables of the expression proposed for the mass transfer.
