Notes: Available generalized correlations of fugacity coefficients of nonpolar liquids are reexamined in their lower temperature ranges, and these correlations are extended to a reduced temperature of 0.35. Generalized functions are constructed from literature data on vapor pressures and liquid densities. Two sets of functions are presented with w and zc, respectively, as third parameter. The results fulfill a need for basic information in the engineering of cryogenic systems. The same vapor pressure data are correlated in a generalized form down to Tr = 0.35 to give a one-parameter family of reduced vapor pressures curves. The correlation is compared with data on simple fluids, normal fluids, polar substances, and quantum fluids.

Notes: A generalized equation of state is developed by combinin a hard-sphere equation with a truncated virial equation and generalizing the reduced hard-sphere diameter as a function of reduced temperature and acentric factor. The new equation quantitatively agrees with Pitzer's table of compressibility factor over wide ranges of gas and vapor states and is always better than the truncated virial equation. Since the terms in the equation are physically meaningful it is capable of being improved systematically by including higher virial coefficients and by using hard-core equations of state for nonspherical cores. The equation is extended to mixtures with well-developed combination rules.

Notes: The industrial importance of mixtures of closely similar substances is out of proportion to their relatively small numbers due to their frequent occurrence and the difficulty of their separations. A procedure specially designed for the general prediction of their properties, particularly relative volatility, over a wide range of state variables is needed.Such a procedure is developed in this work for convenient application to multicomponent systems with the use of generalized functions. The relative volatility of a nearly ideal system is decomposed into ideal solution factors and nonideality factors. The first order perturbation thory of Longuet-Higgins is adopted for the calculation of the nonideality factor. The validity of the procedure for the quantitative description of real mixtures is demonstrated with the system propane/propylene for which extensive data are available. The required pure fluid properties for the general application of the procedure are reviewed. System parameters are evaluated for 15 binary systems of industrial interest.
