Notes: Liquid composition-total pressure and liquid composition-liquid density data for the carbon dioxide-ethane system were measured at -31.7°, -17.8°, -3.9°, and 10.0°C (-25°, 0°, 25°, and 50°F ± 0.02°F), from 0 to 80 mole % CO2 at 10°C and 0 to 100% CO2 for the other isotherms. The Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state with a modified A0 mixing rule was used to correlate the composition-pressure data, with deviations in predicted pressures of only 0.8% average and 2% maximum. Vapor-liquid equilibrium compositions and component K values y/x were then predicted for this minimum boiling azeotrope system from 10° down to -56.7°C (50° to -70°F).

Notes: A finite difference technique has been developed which is suitable for the derivation of feedforward control algorithms for the control of distributed parameter processes. The method embodies both steady state and transient feedforward compensation. An experimental study, involving closed loop, on line, analogue computer control of a simple distributed parameter process proves the feasibility of the finite difference technique. The process under study is a steam water heat exchanger subject to inlet temperature forcing and controlled by flow rate manipulation. The new technique yielded significantly improved results when compared with the performance of a conventional two-mode feedback controller, or a linearized feedforward control algorithm.

Notes: A calculation method to determine the response time to be used for approximate mathematical models is developed for the dynamic behavior of distillation columns. Previous work has shown that the concept of Inventory time can be successfully used to approximate the response time, that is, the 60% point of the step response, of distillation columns operating at a high degree of separation. A modified version of the inventory time method, based on the minimum change of storage, has been developed to predict the response time for other ranges of separation within reasonable bounds of error, ± 10%. Only steady state and design data were used. A rigorous nonlinear simulation generates the steady state and transient data upon which the approximate models are based. While the modified inventory time method developed cannot handle every possible operating condition with the desired degree of accuracy, it has been shown to apply over a much wider range of operating conditions than the original inventory time method.

Description: A study was made of the behavior of polyisobutylene under motion at a constant stretch history for both strip biaxial extensional flow and simple extensional flow. Steady-state non-Newtonian viscosities were observed at various constant stretch histories. Newtonian viscosities for both strip biaxial and simple extensional flow were found to be in agreement with the classical theory. The results of the study provide an essential part of the experimental background necessary for the development of a new general stress-strain-time relation for uncrosslinked and lightly crosslinked polymers.

Description: An investigation to determine the effects of pavement surface condition on the cornering forces developed by a group of 6.50x13 automobile tires of different tread design was conducted at the Langley aircraft landing loads and traction facility. The tests were made at fixed yaw angles of 3,4.5, and 6 deg at forward speeds up to 80 knots on two concrete surfaces of different texture under dry, damp, and flooded conditions. The results showed that the cornering forces were extremely sensitive to tread pattern and runway surface texture under all conditions and that under flooded conditions tire hydroplaning and complete loss of cornering force occurred at a forward velocity predicted from an existing formula based on tire inflation pressure. Futher, tests on the damp concrete with a smooth tire and a four-groove tire showed higher cornering forces at a yaw angle of 3 deg than at 4.5 deg; this indicated that maximum cornering forces are developed at extremely small steering angles under these conditions.

Description: The purpose of the test program was to evaluate the performance of different epoxy systems as replacements for existing epoxy systems in the SBASI. The three areas of investigation were the connector shell potting, the epoxy tape under the charge cup, and the epoxy impregnated fiberglass over the output charge. Factors considered, in addition to performance, were availability, shelf life, pot life, and effect on producibility and cost.

Description: A series of coatings was developed for the space shuttle type silica fiber insulation system and characterized for optical and physical properties. Reentry simulation tests were run using a radiant panel and also using a hypersonic plasma arc. The coatings produced had improved physical and optical properties as well as greater reuse capability over the GE version of the JSC-0042 coating.
