Notes: Boundary-layer solutions are given for heat and mass transfer at mobile interfaces. The results are asymptotically valid for small thermal and material diffusivities, or for short exposure times. Phase breakup and coalescence are formally included, but Marangoni effects are not. Effects of rapid mass transfer, chemical reactions, and variable boundary conditions are evaluated. The treatment is a generalization of the penetration and surface-renewal theories.

Notes: Particle size measurements of chromium hydrous oxide sols using electron microscopy and light scattering techniques were in excellent agreement. Comparison was based on the most probable diameter and width of the distribution. The normal, lognormal, and zero-order logarithmic density functions provided good first-order approximations to the particle size measurements. The chromium hydrous sols were less than 0.5 μm in size.A closed wet cell specimen holder in an electron microscope was developed to observe, in situ, the chromium hydrous oxide sols. The colloidal particles had a uniform spherical shape with a narrow size distribution. Observation of the particle formation process in the closed wet cell qualitatively supports the mechanism that basic polymeric sulfates act as embryos in the formation of these particles.

Notes: Acoustic velocity data for various isotherms from 1 to 70 atm. are presented for argon (32°F.), nitrogen (32°F.), methane (32°, 70°F.) tetrafluoromethane (32°, 70° F), dichlorodifluoromethane (240°F., p 〈 30 atm.), and various mixtures (32°F.). Interaction potential force constants for the pure gases are derived from the acoustic data with values for tetrafluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane differing significantly from previous literature values. BWR constants are also reported for argon and tetrafluoromethane.

Notes: A kinetic model based on the most important free radical reaction steps has been developed for propane pyrolysis. The kinetic and product distribution data were obtained over a wide range of conversions at temperatures from 700 to 850°C. and with various amounts of steam or other diluents. The results of the investigation clarify the important reaction steps and the effect of the critical operating variables.

Notes: The quasilinearization technique is used to overcome the dimensionality difficulty in dynamic programming. The advantage of this approach is that not only the dimensionality or the fast memory requirement can be reduced, but the computation time required can also be reduced considerably. A technique is also devised to overcome the linearity difficulty encountered in this reduction in dimensionality. To illustrate the approach, the three dimensional crosscurrent extraction problem is solved as a one- and a two-dimensional problem in the dynamic programming algorithm. Only approximately 1 min. is required to solve this one-dimensional problem. However, if this problem were solved as a three-dimensional problem, computation time of the order of hours would be required.

Notes: The kinetics of binary anion exchange accompained by a fast irreversible reaction at the exchanger surface was studied. Dowex 1, X-8, in the hydroxyl form was contacted with a strong acid in a well-stirred batch reactor and concentration-time data were obtained by electrical conductivity measurements. The process was analyzed assuming rate control by film diffusion, intraparticle diffusion, and a combination of both mechanisms. The results indicated that models based on the individual mechanisms gave quite satisfactory representations of the data under appropriate conditions, but the combined model appears superior in the nominally intraparticle diffusion controlled range. It was also found that severe particle cracking occurs, particularly with larger resin particles, at high solution concentrations. This results in degradation of the particles as well as apparent intraparticle diffusion coefficients that vary during the exchange process. Care must be taken to avoid or to account for this phenomenon.

Notes: Experimental data on the drop size distribution obtained from multiple nozzles in a spray column are presented and analyzed. For nozzles having a diameter above the critical size, the distribution pattern change from near normal monomodal to bimodal and back again to monomodal but skewed toward the larger size fraction. There is no change in the observed maximum drop size in the distribution with flow rate except near the critical velocity region. Drop breakup mechanisms appear to be different from the above pattern for nozzles below a critical size.A model is proposed for prediction of the complete range of drop sizes observed.

Notes: Plastics in solid wastes is a problem of growing concern. Recycling of wastes is currently believed to be the most acceptable form of disposal in the long run; however, this route is known to be especially difficult for plastics. Recycling would be easier if the various generic types present in solid wastes, mainly polyethylene, polystyrene and poly (vinyl chloride), could be isolated; however, this would be very difficult and expensive. This is a first report on research aimed at evaluating the potential of recycling plastics as a polymer blend of the various generic types. This approach suffers from the difficulty that the different plastics are incompatible and the blend has poor mechanical properties. The extent of this problem is documented with data on many ternary blends employing virgin polyethylene, polystyrene and poly (vinyl chloride) of numerous grades likely to be found in solid wastes. Property degradation was found to be more severe as the complexity of the blend increased, indicating that general municipal wastes could be reused only in very low grade applications, whereas certain commercial wastes might have brighter prospects. Strategies for improving blend properties are outlined.
