Notes: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary This note presents the critical values of the downward point load applied at the crown of clamped circular arches with inextensible centroidal line. The calculations are based on the Euler theory of the initially curved elastica undergoing large deflections. In contrast to the two-highed circular arches the buckling is not always of the sidesway type; for most practical dimensions of the clamped arch the instability is characterized by snap-through.

Notes: Summary Neural correlates of electrically-evoked release calling (Fig. 2A) and of electrically-evoked mating calling (Fig. 3A) were recorded from the partially denervated brain stem of the leopard frog. These correlates contain two basic patterns of activity found in normal calling (Fig. 1)—the following of a vocal-phase by an inspiratory-phase, and the breaking up of the vocal-phase into pulses. These correlates persisted unchanged following complete denervation of the brain stem (Figs. 2E and 3E), showing that these patterns of activity do not require peripheral feedback for their generation. These patterns, with the exception of vocal-phase pulsing during release calling, are also independent of the stimulus pattern, showing that they are generated within the brain stem. The “exception” can probably be explained by direct imposition of the stimulus rate upon normal pulse-generating mechanisms in the region of the stimulating electrode. Other evidence (Schmidt, 1973) shows that the vocal-phase pattern of release calling is independent of the natural tactile stimulus.

Notes: Summary Neural activity correlated with electrically-evoked, mating calling movements of the larynx was recorded from the region of the main sensory nucleus of the trigeminal in the northern leopard frog (Figs. 1, 3–5). The probable importance of this area for calling was shown further by the facts that stimulation through an electrode from which correlates had been recorded evoked release calling activity (Fig. 6) and that bilateral, electrolytic lesions through such electrodes abolished electrically-evoked, mating calling movements of the larynx (Fig. 3). The neural correlates survived complete denervation of the brain stem and their patterns were independent of the pattern of the evoking stimulus (Fig. 4). Therefore, the patterns of these correlates were generated within the brain stem. Neural correlates and laryngeal electromyograms typical of mating calling could be recorded after removal of the preoptic area, showing that that structure was not necessary for generation of mating calling patterns (Fig. 5). A revised model of the neural mechanisms of calling is presented (Fig. 8). This model postulates a vocal-phase pulse generator in the region of the main sensory nuclei V. This generator, once triggered, then activates more posterior breathing circuits and modifies their activity to produce calling, rather than breathing movements.

Notes: Abstract Endocardiosis was diagnosed as an incidental finding in two rhesus monkeys. The gross and histologic appearance of the lesions was described, and the similarity of this lesion to lesions of endocardiosis as found in dogs and man was discussed.

Notes: The levels of free-, peptide-, and protein-amino acids were measured during the synchronous growth and division cycle of a thermophilic strain of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Most of the protein amino acids exhibited little periodism (as % of total cellular-N); however, the free- and peptide-amino acids showed a variety of dramatic changes in level during the cell cycle.Fractionation of the acid-soluble peptides by Sephadex gel-filtration showed that an average of only 2.8% of the peptide amino acids were associated with peptides of high molecular weight (〉 5000), while approximately 75% of the peptide amino acids were components of low molecular weight peptides (〈 700). The low molecular weight peptides were predominately made up of relatively few amino acids (i.e., alanine, glutamate, lysine, glycine and arginine accounted for approximately 92% of the low molecular weight peptide amino acids).Several experiments revealed that nucleotide-peptides do not contribute significantly to the pool of acid-soluble peptides during the cell cycle of this organism.
