Notes: A model for the hydration behavior of human stratum corneum has been developed from measurements on in vitro samples isolated in a manner which minimized tissue treatment and trauma. Water sorption/desorption rate measurements as a function of water activity, temperature, and tissue integrity are reported. These data, together with thermodynamic data (infrared and nmr results reported earlier) are consistent with a model in which rapidly sorbed/desorbed water (ca. 0.5 mg water/mg stratum corneum) is associated with (“bound” by) the tissue, while slowly sorbed/desorbed “free” water (up to 12 mg water/mg stratum corneum) is kinetically restricted and probably intracellular in location. Both equilibrium water binding and desorption kinetic data suggest structural changes of this cellular water barrier upon hydration. Evidence for hysteresis in water sorption isotherms (reported by others) could not be reproduced.

Notes: The liquid film in annular two-phase flow is maintained by droplet movement to and from the gas core and by wave action. This work examines droplet movement and its effect on the liquid film. Film formation and movement both axially and circumferentially were investigated by using transient techniques.

Notes: An investigation into the shifts induced in the NMR spectra of some derivatives of substituted phenols by tris(dipivalomethanato)europium and tris(dipivalomethanato)praseodymium is reported. The phenol derivatives were studied to ascertain the possible utility of the shift reagents as an aid in the analysis of phenolformaldehyde resins by NMR spectroscopy, and to gain information on induced shifts with molecules having more than one possible co-ordination site.

Notes: The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using a fluorocarbon liquid in a liquid-liquid contacting device for extracorporeal blood oxygenation. Extraction experiments were carried out wherein blood was gently contacted with FC-43 (a fluorinated tributyl amine) for up to 48 hr. The fluorocarbon caused no significant change in red cell volume, white cell count, plasma hemoglobin, platelet count, plasma fibrinogen, or the relative amounts of thirteen different plasma proteins. To determine toxicity, FC-43 slugs and emulsions were injected intravenously and intraaortically into dogs. No chemical toxicity has been found, but the fluorocarbon is intolerable above about 1.7 mg/kg because it retards the flow of blood through pulmonary capillaries. FC-43 was used for several in vivo tests of a vertical cylindrical blood oxygenator. The hemolysis caused by the falling film of fluorocarbon on the inner Teflon wall of the cylinder was considerably less than that caused by direct contact between blood and Teflon, suggesting that the blood-fluorocarbon interface is quite atraumatic. All these results indicate that this fluorocarbon liquid holds considerable promise for use in a liquid-liquid blood oxygenator.
