    Notizen: A study of the infrared and Raman spectra of single crystals and powders of ZnGa2O4 yields the following k = 0 phonon frequencies: 175 cm-1 (T1u), 328 cm-1 (T1u), 420 cm-1 (T1u), 570 cm-1 (T1u), 467 cm-1 (T2g), 611 cm-1 (T2g), 638 cm -1 (Eg) and 714 cm-1 (A1g).The results are compared with the frequencies of the vibronic sidebands of the Cr3+ R line emission as observed in ZnGa2O4: Cr3+. It is found that the strogest vibronics of the R lines are due to coupling of the Cr3+ electrons with the T1u modes of the ZnGa2O4 lattice, especially with the two higher frequency T1u modes.

    Notizen: Raman scattering from polaritons in organic biaxial crystal m-dinitrobenzene has been observed by a photographic method. In order to obtain a greater shift of polaritons the directional dispersion of the incident wave vector has been taken into account, so that the polariton disperison curves over the range from 500 cm-1 to 3500 cm-1 have been observed.

    Notizen: Summary The ultrastructure of the pars intermedia (PI) of the normal VII +/+ and hereditary nephrogenic diabetes inspidus DI Os/+ mice has been studied with particular reference to the morphology of the glandular cells and their innervation. Four types of cells were observed in both the genotypes of mice, 1) the light glandular cell, 2) the dark cell, 3) a type of cell similar to ependymal cells and 4) a small percentage of typical ACTH cells, observed mostly on the PI border of the cleft and rarely in the centre of PI. The predominant light glandular cells contain mainly two types of membrane bound granules: 1) electron dense core granules, which measure 1500–2500 Å and 2) electron lucent vesicles, which measure 3000–4000 Å in diameter. Granules of intermediate size with various density are also present in both types of mice. The electron dense core granules are predominant in DI Os/+ mice, whereas, electron lucent vesicles are predominant in the normal VII +/+ mice. Similar uniform size membrane bound electron dense granules have been observed in ACTH cells of PI and pars distalis. From earlier experimental evidences and the present observations, it is concluded that the dense core granules in PI may be synthesizing ACTH or ACTH-like substance. It is also discussed that these dense core granules may further mature and give rise to MSH in the form of electron lucent vesicles. If it is so, PI light glandular cells may have dual functions, of producing MSH and ACTH. One of the functions of ependymal-like cells, may be the transport of PI secretion. Three types of nerve endings are observed throughout the PI, making synaptic contact with the predominant cell type. The innervation is more in DI Os/+ mice than in normal mice. The classification of these nerves is according to Bargmann and co-workers 1) peptidergic neurosecretory fibers, contain mainly membrane bound dense core granules, measuring 1200 to 1800 Å, and are the classic neurosecretory granules; 2) adrenergic fibers, measuring 700–900 Å; 3) cholinergic fibers, measuring 300–400 Å. Adrenergic and cholinergic fibers are more towards the hypophysial cleft. The increased innervation, the synaptic contact, the extremely hypertrophied PI and the greater activity of its light glandular cells in the DI Os/+ mice show the PI is under the influence of the nervous system.

    Notizen: Summary The extremely hypertrophic and hyperplastic pars intermedia (PI), of the hereditary nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (DI Os/+) mice, which is correlated to the increased neurosecretory activity of the hypothalamo-hypophysial system on one hand, and the hypertrophy of the adrenal cortex on the other, is compared to these structures in normal VII+/+ mice. In DI mouse, in addition to the moderate hypertrophy of the pituitary gland as a whole, other unique features include a great penetration of neurohypophysial fibres in PI and the presence of a great number of light glandular cells. Very often, these glandular cells are surrounded by neurosecretory fibres, pituicyte-like fibres or AF+ granules. The small marginal cuboidal cells bordering the hypophysial cleft contain and/or are surrounded by AF+ granules. These features are lacking in normal VII+/+ mice. The excess release of NSM from the neurohypophysis by different stresses such as dehydration, formalin injection, surgery and adrenalectomy is accompanied by a hypertrophy of PI and of the light glandular cells as well as of the adrenal cortex in the normal and DI mice. In DI mice under different conditions of stress, all the AF+ granules in different parts of PI disappear in addition to the above changes. From the present experimental evidence and from the fact that DI mice have a hypertrophied hypothalamus (neurohypophysis), pituitary and adrenal cortex, it appears that these three endocrine entities are functionally related. The role played by vasopressin in augmenting MSH, CRF and ACTH is discussed. The probable role of light glandular cells of PI in synthesis of ACTH or ACTH-like substances is also discussed.

    Notizen: Summary The sites of production of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) are studied by the immunoglobulin-peroxidase bridge technique, using antisera prepared against synthetic porcine β 1–24 and β 17–39 ACTH, and bovine β MSH on the rat adenohypophysis. Presence of ACTH all over the pars intermedia (PI) is indicated by staining with antisera βp 1–24 and βp 17-3-9 ACTH. There are darkly stained ACTH cells in the PI and pars tuberalis (PT), similar to those in the pars distalis (PD). With higher dilutions of the ACTH antiserum, staining intensity disappears or reduces markedly in majority of the PI cells, whereas, the ACTH cells in the PI, PD and PT do not vary much in their staining intensity. Therefore, it is concluded that majority of the PI glandular cells (light glandular and dark cells) contain less corticotropin than the ACTH cells. From these observations, it seems to me that the major amount of corticotropin is supplied by the ACTH cells of the PD, PI and PT, and less by the light glandular and dark cells of the PI. The antiserum is ineffective after absorption, so the staining reaction appears to be specific for βp 1–24 and βb 17–39 ACTH. Presence of MSH all over the PI is indicated by staining with antisera to bovine β MSH. Majority of the PI cells are highly stained even with higher dilution of the antiserum. The unstained cells in the PI seem to be ACTH cells and/or marginal cuboidal cells. The antiserum was ineffective after absorption, so the staining reaction appears to be specific for βb MSH. Control over the PD corticotropin through the median eminence portal circulation and the PI and PT control through nervous system is also discussed.

    Notizen: Summary Electron microscopic localization of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) in light, dark and ACTH cells in the pars intermedia (PI) of rats and mice is attempted by using antisera to βp 1–24, βp 17–39 ACTH and βb MSH with the immunoglobulin-peroxidase bridge technique. All of the PI parenchymatous cells (light, dark and ACTH cells), except the marginal cuboidal and the ependymal like cells, in rats and mice show very good localization of ACTH and MSH staining. In the light and dark cells, stain of varying intensity is seen on the secretory granules, vesicles and also in many places on the surface of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. There is no staining on the mitochondria, in the nuclei or in the granules inside and around the cisternae of the Golgi complex. Dark stained dense core granules become larger and larger as they appear farther and farther away from the Golgi complex. On the other hand, in the ACTH cells of the PI, ACTH antisera show stronger stained granules in the Golgi complex including the cisternae, similar to the pars distalis (PD) ACTH cells. From these observations it is concluded that the corticotropin in light and dark cells, is not packaged or condensed in the Golgi complex like that in the ACTH cells. MSH synthesis in light and dark cells also seems to be similar to that of ACTH synthesis. It is likely that the granules accumulate ACTH and MSH secretions after they are liberated from the Golgi cisternae, and thus become bigger and bigger in size. In case of ACTH cells of PI and PD, corticotropin may be packaged in Golgi cisternae and the size of the granule does not change much. This shows that there are distinct immunocytochemical differences between the light, dark and ACTH cells of the PI. At the moment, it is difficult to say whether ACTH and MSH are present in the same granule or not. The present and previous studies show that the ACTH and MSH secretion in the PI of rats and mice depends on the hypothalamic neural control.

    Notizen: The mass spectra of all three monochloro-, seven of the dichloro- and two of the trichloro-substituted benzophenones are reported. The major fragments in the spectra are due to α-fission to oxonium ions followed by the well-known subsequent fragmentations. The ring bearing the greater number of chlorine atoms appears to cleave more readily, with 2-chloro substituents enhancing this tendency. There is evidence for the formation of the biphenylene ion in all monochloro and all dichloro compounds studied and for the formation of the chloro biphenylene ion in both trichloro compounds studied. In the case of 2,2′-, 2,4- and 3,4-dichlorobenzophenones evidence exists for hydrogen transfer between rings.

    Notizen: 1,2-Diaminoethane and 2-aminoethanol-1 were added to the isobutane plasma of a chemical ionization mass spectrometer. The resulting reactant gas mixture did not react with additives containing a single oxygen functional group. Addition reactions were observed with some additives containing multiple oxygen functions. Additives containing nitrogen functions were protonated by the reactant mixture. The relative proportion of protonation to addition depended on the ability of the additive to chelate the reactant ion and on the basicity of the additive. This use of 1,2-diaminoethane and 2-aminoethanol-1 provides a convenient method of varying the reactivity of the plasma in a chemical ionization source.

    Notizen: The electron-impact-induced fragmentation in 2′-nitro-4-stilbazole is triggered by the oxidation of the olefinic double bond by the ortho nitro group in the initial step, while such an interaction under the same condition is totally absent in the meta and para isomers. The important fragmentation in 2′-nitro-2-stilbazole is the formation of a cyclised ion with the elimination of the nitro group.
