Notes: A study of the infrared and Raman spectra of single crystals and powders of ZnGa2O4 yields the following k = 0 phonon frequencies: 175 cm-1 (T1u), 328 cm-1 (T1u), 420 cm-1 (T1u), 570 cm-1 (T1u), 467 cm-1 (T2g), 611 cm-1 (T2g), 638 cm -1 (Eg) and 714 cm-1 (A1g).The results are compared with the frequencies of the vibronic sidebands of the Cr3+ R line emission as observed in ZnGa2O4: Cr3+. It is found that the strogest vibronics of the R lines are due to coupling of the Cr3+ electrons with the T1u modes of the ZnGa2O4 lattice, especially with the two higher frequency T1u modes.

Notes: Raman scattering from polaritons in organic biaxial crystal m-dinitrobenzene has been observed by a photographic method. In order to obtain a greater shift of polaritons the directional dispersion of the incident wave vector has been taken into account, so that the polariton disperison curves over the range from 500 cm-1 to 3500 cm-1 have been observed.

Notes: Vibrational spectra of the two Lewis complexes, phosphine borane, PH3BH3, and trifluoro-phosphine borane, PF3BH3, have been investigated for several isotopic species preserving C3v symmetry. New assignments are proposed and substantiated by normal coordinate analyses formulated in the compliance constant basis.

Notes: A microphotometric method is introduced that allows measurement of the contraction-relaxation kinetics of Spirostomum in response to electrical stimulation. The time course of contraction includes a rapidly contracting phase of some 4-5 mS during which cells shorten at a rate in excess of 100 cell lengths sec-1. While a stimulus strength-duration curve determines the threshold of the response, the response to above threshold stimuli of different strengths and to trains of stimuli suggest that contraction of Spirostomum may not be an all-or-none event. The kinetics of relaxation following high stimulating voltages and repetitive after contractions also induced by high voltages are explained by excitation-contraction coupling through a stimulus-dependent intermediate effector, possibly the release of calcium ions. Changes in resting membrane potential detected by intracellular recording do not influence the initiation of contraction, while microinjection of calcium buffers above 10-5 M Ca2+ invariably induces contraction.

Notes: The effects of lanthanum ions upon amoeboid movement and upon the redistribution of dense cytoplasmic inclusions following centrifugation were investigated in Amoeba discoides. Treatment with low lanthanum concentrations produced a characteristic inhibited condition in which locomotion ceased while saltatory movements continued. The resorting of stratified cytoplasm by local internal cytoplasmic flow was unaffected. This contrasted with p-hydroxymercuribenzoate treatment which inhibited both locomotion and saltatory movements. The inhibitory effects of lanthanum ions were antagonised by calcium ions but not by magnesium ions. It is reasoned that lanthanum competes for a peripheral binding site thereby disrupting a calcium-mediated regulatory mechanism of amoeboid movement.

Notes: The mass spectra of all three monochloro-, seven of the dichloro- and two of the trichloro-substituted benzophenones are reported. The major fragments in the spectra are due to α-fission to oxonium ions followed by the well-known subsequent fragmentations. The ring bearing the greater number of chlorine atoms appears to cleave more readily, with 2-chloro substituents enhancing this tendency. There is evidence for the formation of the biphenylene ion in all monochloro and all dichloro compounds studied and for the formation of the chloro biphenylene ion in both trichloro compounds studied. In the case of 2,2′-, 2,4- and 3,4-dichlorobenzophenones evidence exists for hydrogen transfer between rings.

Notes: 1,2-Diaminoethane and 2-aminoethanol-1 were added to the isobutane plasma of a chemical ionization mass spectrometer. The resulting reactant gas mixture did not react with additives containing a single oxygen functional group. Addition reactions were observed with some additives containing multiple oxygen functions. Additives containing nitrogen functions were protonated by the reactant mixture. The relative proportion of protonation to addition depended on the ability of the additive to chelate the reactant ion and on the basicity of the additive. This use of 1,2-diaminoethane and 2-aminoethanol-1 provides a convenient method of varying the reactivity of the plasma in a chemical ionization source.

Notes: The electron-impact-induced fragmentation in 2′-nitro-4-stilbazole is triggered by the oxidation of the olefinic double bond by the ortho nitro group in the initial step, while such an interaction under the same condition is totally absent in the meta and para isomers. The important fragmentation in 2′-nitro-2-stilbazole is the formation of a cyclised ion with the elimination of the nitro group.

Notes:  - Intramolecular O—H… N hydrogen bonding between the hydroxylic and terminal amino groups of α-hydroxy-N-caproylhydrazobenzene (5) permits J(HCOH) to be observed in most solvents. The configuration and conformation of 5 are discussed and an H—C—O—H dihedral angle (φ) of 145° is calculated. Solvent effects on J(HCOH) as well as the role they appear to exert in restricting internal rotation of the phenyl substituents of 5 are discussed.

Notes: A Czerny-Turner spectrograph is described in which an image intensifier is positioned in front of the photographic plate. This system shows a large gain in sensitivity over conventional spectrographs without serious loss of resolution. The reciprocity failure of this detection system is found to be very low.
