    Description: Recent technological developments have enabled application of the techniques of radio astronomy to problems of earth and ocean physics. To illustrate these applications, we review results from the 19.35 GHz Electrically Scanned Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) now in operation on Nimbus 5. A composite image of the earth made from ESMR observations taken between January 12 and January 16, 1973 illustrates the wide range of physical effects in single channel microwave observations. Multi-frequency observations made from aircraft have demonstrated an even greater potential for satellite radiometry when several frequencies and polarizations are used simultaneously. As an illustration of the considerations required in multi-channel radiometry, we discuss the choice of frequencies for the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) planned for the Nimbus G satellite.

    Notes: The photosensitivities and the rates of photocrosslinking of poly(vinyl α-cyanocinamate) and poly(vinyl α-cyanocinnamoxyacetate) were investigated. The photocrosslinkings of these polymers proceeded mainly through radical addition, and these polymers showed higher photosensitivities than poly(vinyl cinnamate) and poly(vinyl cinnamoxyacetate), in spite of lower rates of photocrosslinking of the former polymers.

    Notes: By means of bromine labeling and ESR, the grafting reactions of styrene onto preirradiated polyethylene have been investigated. Not all the radicals produced by irradiations participate in grafting reactions all together, but they are rendered active bit by bit by the swelling of crystalline parts of polyethylene. The growing rates for polystyryl graft chains at 20°C decrease from 4 monomer units/active site/sec to one-fourth the initial value after 100 min. On the contrary, the average lifetimes increase from 〈103 sec to 〉2.6 × 103 sec. The number-average molecular weight of graft chains also increases with reaction times and rises to 3.5 × 105 after 90 min at 20°C.

    Description: Synoptic views of the entire polar regions of earth have been obtained free of the usual persistent cloud cover using a scanning microwave radiometer operating at a wavelength of 1.55 cm on board the Nimbus-5 satellite. Three different views at each pole are presented utilizing data obtained at approximately one-month intervals from December 1972 to February 1973. Large discrepancies exist between the long-term ice cover depicted in various atlases and the actual extent of the canopies. The distribution of multiyear ice in the north polar region is markedly different from that predicted by existing ice dynamics models. Irregularities in the edge of the Antarctic sea ice pack occur that have neither been observed previously nor anticipated. The brightness temperatures of the Greenland and Antarctic glaciers show interesting contours probably related to the ice and snow morphologic structure.

    Description: In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the microwave radiometers to be carried aboard the Nimbus 5 and 6 satellites and proposed for one of the earth observatory satellites, remote measurements of microwave radiation at wavelengths ranging from 0.8 to 21 cm have been made of a variety of the earth's surfaces from the NASA CV-990 A/C. Brightness temperatures of sea water surfaces of varying roughness, of terrain with varying soil moisture, and of sea ice of varying structure were observed. In each case, around truth information was available for correlation with the microwave brightness temperature. The utility of passive microwave radiometry in determining ocean surface wind speeds, at least for values higher than 7 meters/second has been demonstrated. In addition, it was shown that radiometric signatures can be used to determine soil moisture in unvegetated terrain to within five percentage points by weight. Finally, it was demonstrated that first year thick, multi-year, and first year thin sea ice can be distinguished by observing their differing microwave emissivities at various wavelengths.

    Notes: Our previous paper described graphical procedures for evaluating the mode of association in ideal discrete and indefinite cases. This paper concerns the application of such procedures in cases where the non-ideality term BM1 must be considered. Bovine liver L-glutamate dehydrogenase and lysozyme are used as model systems. Several graphical procedures for dealing with cases of 1 - m, 1 - m - n, or indefinite association are developed. The procedure is based on the evaluation of the weight-fraction monomer with-out prior calculation of BM1, using graphical analysis to evaluate the non-ideality term.

Dies ist auf eine Charge-Transfer-Komplexbildung zwischen Katalysator und entstandenem Polymer zurückzuführen, was durch UV-, ESR- und IR-Spektren bestätigt wird.Durch die Polymerisation von Vinylacetylen (1a), 1-Hexen-3-in (1b), 2-Methyl-1,5-hexadien-3-in (3a), 2-Methyl-5-hexen-3-in-2-ol (3b) oder 5-Methoxy-5-methyl-1-hexen-3-in (3c) werden Leiterpolymere (4) mit Konjugation in der Kette gewonnen.Die gewonnenen Polymere (Molmasse = 2000-7000) sind hellgelbe bis hellbraune Pulver mit den für konjugierte Polymere charakteristischen Eigenschaften, wie z. B. Wärmestandfestigkeit im Vakuum und in Luft, Absorption im ultravioletten und nahen sichtbaren Bereich, breites Fluoreszenzspektrum, elektrische Leitfähigkeit und ESR-Signale.
    Notes: The cationic polymerization of vinylacetylenes can be implemented using an excess of catalysts, such as BF3O(C2H5)2, SnCl4, H2SO4, CCl3COOH, CF3COOH (20-50 mol per 100 mol monomer). This is due to the formation of a charge-transfer complex between the catalyst and the polymer obtained, which was confirmed by UV, ESR and IR spectra.Polymers with conjugated ladder sequences in the chain (LP) (4) were prepared using vinylacetylene (1a), 1-hexen-3-yne (1b), 2-methyl-1,5-hexadiene-3-yne (3a), 2-methyl-5-hexen-3-yn-2-ol (3b) or 5-methoxy-5-methyl-1-hexen-3-yne (3c). The polymers obtained (molar mass = 2000-7000) are pale yellow to pale brown powders which display properties characteristic of polymers with conjugated bonds, i.e. thermal stability in vacuum and air, continuous absorption in UV and near visible regions, broad fluorescence spectra, electric conductivity and ESR signals.The effect of heat treatment in vacuum and air on the structure and some electrophysical properties of LPs was studied by IR, luminescence, ESR and mass-spectroscopy and also by TGA, DTA, and X-ray diffraction analyses.The heat treatment in the temperature range of 150-400°C gives rise to a complete cyclization accompanied by a partial degradation and leads to the formation of polycondensed aromatic structures and to a sharp increase of electroconductivity up to 1.10-5Ω-1cm-1 and to an increase of the concentration of paramagnetic particles up to 1.1020 spin/g at an ESR signal width in vacuum of 0,4 gauss (0,4.10-4 tesla).

    Notes: The adsorption of tritium-labeled sodium stearate and 35S-labeled sodium dodecylsulfate from aqueous solution on bent and on stretched polyethylene strips was directly measured. The amount of adsorption increased from 2.5 to 4.5 times on surfaces of various polyethylene samples stretched from 5.2 to 5.3 times the original length. For one sample, adsorption increased 8 and 2.5 times, respectively, on the convex and concave surfaces of a bent strip. Autoradiographs of the strips taken after adsorption revealed the appearance of both homogeneous and heterogeneous adsorption on the stretched surface of the polyethylene. The electron micrographs of the strips showed that many small fissures, about 1-5μ in length, formed on their surfaces after the strips were bent or stretched. Enhanced adsorption of the surface-active substance along these fissures was suggested. On the basis of these observations, it is proposed that in stretching or bending, fissures increase adsorption of the detergent, and the adsorption in turn promotes further development of fissures. Thus, bending and adsorption mutually promote the growth of fissures which finally result in failure of the polyethylene.
