Notes:
Summary During a time that is large compared to the relaxation time for a single particle, the distance between twoBrownisai particles separated by more than a few particle diameters remains almost constant. Under these conditions the hydrodynamic interaction with time-dependent particle velocities can be rigorously accounted for if use is made ofOseen's results. The calculation takes into account that the frictional resistance is given byBoussinesq's equation rather than that ofStokes. The correlation functions for the random forces are derived from the theory of fluctuations in fluid mechanics; explicit expressions are given for the limiting case of small interaction. It is found that the effect of the time-dependence of the particle velocities on the correlation functions for the random forces and for the velocities is quite pronounced, but the diffusivities are the same as those found when the interaction is based on steady state hydrodynamics. In the limit of large times the correlation functions are proportional to (time)−3/2.
