Notes: Summary 1. In Na+-free media, 2 min glucose influx(J G i ) was sharply reduced. Li+ activated J G i to a small extent in the absence of Na+, while K+, choline and tris did not. When Na+ was varied with tris, choline, or Li+ substituted for deleted Na+, J G i was a hyperbolic function of Na+ concentration. When K+ was substituted, J G i was a linear function of Na+ concentration (Fig. 1). When K+ was varied at a low, constant Na+ concentration, K+ behaved as a fully competitive inhibitor of Na+ activation of J G i (Fig. 2). 2. At various fixed concentrations of Na+, J G i obeyed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. With decreasing Na+, there was a decrease in maximal glucose influx (J G i max) and no significant change in the apparent Michaelis constant (Kt) (Fig. 3, Table 2). Similar results were obtained with fixed glucose concentrations and varying Na+ (Fig. 4, Table 2). 3. Simultaneous determinations of22Na+ and14C-glucose influxes at 15 sec intervals showed that zero order kinetics pertained over a 2 min incubation period (Fig. 5). Influx coupling coefficients (J na i /J G i ) were determined in double labeling experiments with constant Na+ and varying glucose concentrations or with constant glucose and varying Na+. The experimentally determined coefficient was higher than 1.8 indicating a true coefficient of 2 or more. This coefficient was independent of Na+ and glucose concentrations (Fig. 6, Table 3). 4. After 30 min preloading with glucose, worms were incubated for 30 min in media with modified cation compositions containing 10.5 mM glucose. In low Na+, low K+ media, accumulation of glucose continued. In low Na+, high K+ media, there was no change in tissue glucose. In Na+-free, high K+ media, there was a net glucose efflux against a concentration difference (Table 4). Efflux of22Na+ from worms previously equilibrated in 250 mM22Na+ was not affected by the presence of glucose in the external medium. 5. The data are consistent with Crane's Na+-gradient hypothesis for the transport and accumulation of sugars.Calliobothrium is compared with some other Na+-glucose coupled animal systems and the data are discussed in terms of a model showing first order dependence on concentration and a coupling coefficient of 2 or more.

Notes: Summary Highly efficient oxygen uptake in elasmobranchs, as indicated by frequent excess of $$P_{a_{{\text{o}}_{\text{2}} } } $$ over $$P_{E\mathop {\text{O}}\nolimits_{\text{2}} } $$ has previously been ascribed to the operation of multicapillary rather than counter-current gas exchange by the gills. Analysis of models shows that, at maximum efficiency, a multicapillary system cannot account for values of $$P_{a_{{\text{o}}_{\text{2}} } } $$ greater than $$(P_{I_{_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } } } {\text{ + }}P_{E_{_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } } } )/{\text{2}}$$ . In Port Jackson sharks Heterodontus portusjacksoni) $$P_{a_{{\text{o}}_{\text{2}} } } $$ commonly exceeds $$(P_{I_{_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } } } {\text{ + }}P_{E_{_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}} } } } )/{\text{2}}$$ , which indicates the operation of a functional counter-current at the respiratory surface. The anatomical basis of this counter-current is provided by the demonstration that a continuous flow of water passes between the secondary lamellae into septal canals and thence via the parabranchial cavities to the exterior.

Notes: Summary Acid phosphatase, non-specific esterase and β-glucuronidase have been localised in the midgut epithelium of three species of insect using naphthol esters as substrates and triphenyl-p-amino-phenethyl lead as coupling salt. In all three species acid phosphatase and β-glucuronidase appear to be confined to primary and secondary lysosomes. Non-specific esterase activity was demonstrated within membrane-enclosing bodies in all three species, associated with lipid droplets in T. molitor and C. morosus and with an unidentified intranuclear structure in C. morosus.

Notes: Summary An electron microscope study of the comparative development of muscle and nerve tissue in the pectoral and wing regions of the chick embryo has been performed. Neurogenesis in the pectoral region is seen to be about 2 days advanced over that in the wing. Myogenesis proceeds at approximately the same rate in both areas. Myofibril organization and myotube alignment appear to be independent of developing nerve tissue. An incidental finding is that of aggregates of poorly organized myofilaments inserted into otherwise mature myofibres. It is suggested that this may be a method of increase in muscle length.

Notes: Summary 1. Labeled glycerol influx (J G i ) in the cestode,Hymenolepis diminuta, occurs by diffusion and two mediated systems which were distinguished by their sensitivity to Na+ and inhibitors. The Na+-activated system had a maximal glycerol influx (J G i max) of 91.5 μmoles/g ethanol extracted dry wt/hr and an apparent transport constant (K t ) of 0.24 mM; fluxes of glycerol and Na+ did not appear to be coupled. The second transport system, which operated in the absence of external Na+, had aJ G i max of 83.8 μmoles/g ethanol extracted dry wt/hr and aK t of 0.69 mM (Figs. 1 and 2). 2. DL-β-glycerophosphate, glyceraldehyde, monoacetin, and phloretin inhibited both transport systems, while 1, 2-propanediol inhibited only the Na+-dependent system (Fig. 3). 3. The inhibition ofJ G i by DL-β-glycerophosphate was relieved by ammonium molybdate, adenosine triphosphate, adenosine monophosphate and glucose-6-phosphate (Fig. 4, Table 1). These compounds had little or no effect onJ G i indicating that inhibition was produced by glycerol liberated from the hydrolysis of the phosphorylated compound by surface phosphohydrolases of the worm. 4. Li+, K+, Tris and choline did not replace Na+ as an activator ofJ G i (Fig. 7). Glycerol diffusion rates in media where Li+ or K+ were used to replace Na+ were identical; however, replacement of Na+ with Tris lowered the diffusion rate (Table 2). Diffusion-corrected rates forJ G i were the same in Li+-, K+-, and Tris-substituted media, but were significantly lower in choline-substituted media; choline appeared to act as a competitive inhibitor of mediatedJ G i (Fig. 8, Table 2). 5. Phloretin competitively inhibitedJ G i while phlorizin had no effect. The effects of pH on the inhibition by phloretin indicated that the ketonic form, and not the enolic form, of phloretin was responsible for inhibition (Fig. 5).

Notes: A pure gold tube was found to give filmwise condensation in the absense of organic contamination in a flow sitution simulating that found in seawater conversion plants. A sensitive test for the presence of organic contamination has been developed. The gold tube, promoted by paraffinic thio-silane or mercaptan, gave 100% excellent dropwise condensation. Overall heat transfer coefficients are reported for filmwise and dropwise condensation. The steamside heat transfer coefficient with dropwise condensation was estimated to be over 0.2 MW/m2-°C (35,000 B.t.u./hr-ft2-°F) at the 95% confidence level.Gold plated tubesSupplied by P. Tomalin and S. Mulford of the Office of Saline Water, USDI. gave 95% filmwise condensation after one week of operation in a clean, once-through system.

Notes: Based on new experimental data presented for the boiling point elevation of natural sea water solutions, smoothed tabular values are presented for boiling point elevation (BPE), osmotic coefficient, water activity, osmotic pressure, and minimum separation energy to 200°C and 12% sea salt. The concentration of sodium chloride solutions having the same water activities as sea salt solutions is also presented.Rigorous thermodynamics and the equations for strong electrolytes by Bromley (1973) were used for the correlation together with previously obtained heat capacity and enthalpy data and equations. A simplified equation is presented for boiling point elevation.
