Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 Microangiograms demonstrating the extent of vasculari-zation of (a) a 3 day and (b) a 2 day old allograft. The appearance of the graft vasculature does not indicate its derivation from newly grown-in host capillaries. It is much more likely that the discrete vessels, seen to bridge the space ...

Notes: In an attempt to facilitate a better understanding of the role of noncrystallizable components on the crystallization kinetics, spherulitic growth rates as well as the morphology and melting behavior of isotactic polystyrene in blends with various molecular weight atactic polystyrenes (900 to 1,800,000) over a wide range of concentrations have been studied. The growth rates are uniformly depressed with increasing amounts of atactic diluent. In addition, they are dependent on the molecular weight of the added polystyrene, generally decreasing in the molecular weight ranges between 4800 and 19,800 and between 51,000 and 1,800,000. However, between these two ranges, anomalous growth rates showing a sudden increase are observed, which may be explained by an increase in the entrapment of the noncrystallizable diluent. An explanation based on morphological observations, which showed an increase in coarseness of the spherulites with increasing molecular weight of the added atactic polystyrene, is offered.

Notes: The abrasion resistance of carbon black-reinforced SBR-1500 vulcanizates has been shown to be drastically reduced by the application of tensile strain during the abrasion process. Pre-stressing of similar vulcanizates, however, has no effect upon the abrasion resistance.

Notes: According to the nature of the system, superficial transitions may involve one, two or three distinct particles. Since transition potentials are generally very accurately defined, they can be used to derive information about the various factors acting on adsorbability. The kinetic study of transition processes shows that their rate is controlled by the creation and expansion of nuclei. However, the kinetic parameters differ notably in function of the nature of the system and the amount of electrical energy required.

Notes: Effects of neutralization on butadiene-methacrylic acid copolymers have been studied. In Hycar CTB with 2% acid groups, small-angle x-ray scattering gives evidence of some cation clustering and leads to a value of the mean radius of 5.6 Å for the clusters and a value of the distance between them of 70 Å. When the concentration of salt is increased there is no appreciable change in the distance between clusters or in their size, but their number increases. The structure of clusters has been studied by electron paramagnetic resonance in copolymers neutralized with copper salts. The appearance of a line as in the monohydrated acetate salt permits one to define the structure of clusters consisting of two Cu2+ and four RCOO- ions with two H2O or RCOOH molecules. When the temperature is increased, the signal corresponding to Cu2+-Cu2+ pairs disappears. In high molecular weight butadiene methacrylic acid copolymers with 9% acid groups, we have found the ion pair clusters gathered into larger clusters. In dynamic mechanical properties, a relaxation peak appears at 340°K. We interpret this as due to breaking and possible re-forming of dipolar associations.

Notes: The NMR spectra of the nonaromatic protons in several benzo-substituted five- and six-membered rings have been analyzed at 60- and 90-MHz. The vicinal coupling constants from the—CH2—CH2—fragments give a quantitative assessment of the degree of ring flattening. The distortions are discussed in terms of the structural components of the molecules.

Notes: Spin information should be passed most effectively from a carbon-hydrogen bond to the p-rich carbon-carbon bond of an adjacent cyclopropane ring when the two bonds are parallel. The existence of such a mechanism is tested in a series of spiro hydrocarbons and epoxides in which four-bond zigzag (W) couplings are absent. The structure is varied from the ideal parallel-orbital geometry of spirohexane and the homologous epoxide to the unfavorable staggered-orbital geometry of spiro[2·5]octane and its epoxide. In the parallel-orbital situation, a four-bond non-W coupling of about 0·2 Hz is found; this coupling is absent in the other geometric situations. The meager ability of the cyclopropyl bonds to pass spin information, when compared to the π-orbitals in alkenes, is discussed in terms of the electronic structure of cyclopropanes.
