Notes: Abstract The shell of the adult Ceratostoma foliatum (Gmelin) is characterized by three varices with foliations, and a tooth on the anterior portion of the outer lip. These features are derived gradually from the markedly different sculpture of shells of small juveniles (a network of fine axial and spiral cords). The sculpture changes as the thin, cord-like basic varix is elaborated, reinforced, and modified by the development of a secondary structure (the tooth) and as the number of varices per whorl decreases. Most muricid shell patterns can be derived from juvenile patterns similar to that of C. foliatum by quantitative variations in these four processes. Likely functions of the complex and varied muricid shell structures include stabilization in shifting substrates, defense against predators, and strengthening of the shell. Different functions and shell-growth patterns are likely for the different types of varices. Shell structures are most elaborate on shells of adults. A structure's functions are likely to change as the structure becomes more complex on each successive whorl. The functional period in an individual's lifespan is consequently restricted by the pattern of growth, the rate of structural development, and the rate of shell erosion.

Notes: Summary Reversible alteration of the surface tension of thin films of lipids, proteins and mixtures of both resulted when the thin films were treated with ethylene and other aliphatic gases. This effect appeared to be a nonspecific surface effect related to the molecular size of the gases. Ethylene produced no change which would ascribe to it any specific properties in this test system. The conductivity of an egg lecithin-cholesterol bilayer membrane separating two electrolytes was unaffected by all the test gases (including ethylene), but chloroform vapors markedly altered the conductivity in a reversible manner. In each of the test systems empoloyed, there was no specificity exhibited by ethylene, either qualitatively or quantitatively, indicating the mechanism of ethylene action cannot be explained as a simple physical effect on membranes.

Notes: Abstract One can predict the major features of a muricid's life history from its adult size. Most adults do not grow, and juveniles of all species grow 1 to 2 mm/month, so that larger adults have had fonger juvenile periods. Larger females deposit larger egg capsules and, since each of these contains more eggs, their clutches are larger. Small females deposit several clutches each year, and thus have relatively large annual fecundities. However, large females live longer, so each spawns many more eggs in her life-time than would a smaller female. From 90 to 99% of the juveniles die within their first year. However hatchings of small species are much more likely to complete their first year; a newly hatched Urosalpinx cinerea is 25 times more likely to survive long enough to breed once than a newly hatched Ceratostoma foliatum (Gmelin, 1791).

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,?Your article on "New Astronomy" (Nature, 232, 289; 1971) was informative and interesting. Before commenting on points of substance, however, may I correct one misunderstanding which the article revealed ? I refer to the "widely held" criticism, attributed to "many astronomers" who see the RGO ...
