    Notes: Abstract New analyses show that Tertiary tholeiitic basalts from the Baffin Bay area have generally primitive characteristics. Comparison of the bulk chemical compositions of the basalts with material of known phase relations suggests that these basalts have properties intermediate between investigated natural and synthetic compositions. A discrete group of these basalts coincides in projection with the composition of the liquid produced by the partial melting of garnet periodotite at 30 kb. The compositions in this group are believed to be parental to the other rocks in the province principally through a mechanism of olivine fractionation. Eclogite fractionation is invoked to account for the chemical differences between the two suites of basalts in Baffin Bay.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Existenz von langen Randwellen über einem Festlandsockel wird untersucht für eine repräsentative Sammlung von Schelfprofilen. Die Frequenzen sowohl der “trapped” (geführten) als auch der “leaky” (energieoder impulsabgebenden) Eigenfunktionsformen werden — wenn sie existieren — ermittelt, ausgedrückt in Schelf-Parametern. Es wird gezeigt, daß gewisse, “trapped waves” (geführte Wellen) über einem semi-unendlichen Schelf im wirklichen Ozean nicht existieren. Mit Hilfe der obigen Sammlung hat man ein typisches Schelfprofil von der Ostküste Australiens in vier verschiedenen Arten modelliert. Die Verstärkung des “leaky mode” an der Küstenlinie wird für jedes Modell gefunden in Termen der Frequenz. Der Vergleich der Ergebnisse verdeutlicht die schweren Fehler, die durch grobe Näherungen an das Profil entstehen, sowohl an der Küstenlinie als auch in dem Gebiet des Übergangs vom Schelf in die Tiefsee.
    Abstract: Résumé On examine l'existence d'ondes transversales à longues crêtes au-dessus d'un plateau continental, afin de constituer une collection représentative des profils du plateau. On a trouvé les fréquences du «trapped mode» (mode captif) et du «leaky mode» (mode de transfert d'énergie et du moment) — quand ils existent — et cela en fonction des paramètres du plateau. On montre qu'il n'y a pas, dans l'océan réel, certaines ondes captées théoriques qui existeraient au-dessus d'un plateau semi-infini. Grâce à la collection dont il est parlé ci-dessus, on a modelé de quatre façons différentes un profil typique de la côte Est de l'Australie. Pour chaque modèle on a trouvé l'amplification du «leaky mode» sur la ligne de côte en fonction de la fréquence. La comparaison des résultats montre les erreurs importantes introduites par des approximations sommaires du profil, à la fois près de la ligne de côte et dans la région de transition du plateau continental en mer abyssale.
    Notes: Summary The existence of long edge waves over a continental shelf is examined for a representative collection of shelf profiles. The frequencies of both trapped and leaky modes are found, when they exist, in terms of the shelf parameters. Certain theoretical trapped waves over a semi-infinite shelf are shown not to exist in the real ocean. A typical shelf profile on the east coast of Australia is modelled in four different ways from the above collection. The amplification of the leaky mode at the shoreline is found in terms of frequency for each model. Comparison of the results illustrates the severe errors introduced by crude approximations to the profile both at the shoreline and at the shelf cut-off region.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird die Theorie für Randwellen mit hoher Frequenz dargestellt über einem konvexen exponentiellen Profil mit der Tiefe Null an der Küstenlinie. Dispersionsbeziehungen werden festgestellt in Termen der küstennahen Wellenzahl. Gewisse Grenzen werden bestimmt für die Wellenfrequenz; besonders die Wellen mit hoher Frequenz haben eine niedrigere Frequenzgrenze, die in Termen der Ordnung der Wellenzahl ausgedrückt wird. Die Gruppengeschwindigkeit der hochfrequenten Wellen erreicht einen Höchstwert, tendiert aber bei sehr hohen und sehr niedrigen küstennahen Wellenzahlen nach Null. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Gruppengeschwindigkeit geringer ist als die halbe Phasengeschwindigkeit und daß sie immer geringer ist als eine kritische Geschwindigkeit, die eine Funktion der Schelf-Parameter ist. Diese kritische Geschwindigkeit beträgt ca. 26 m/s für das Schelfgebiet vor Sydney.
    Abstract: Résumé On expose la théorie des ondulations à haute fréquence en bordure d'un profil exponentiel convexe, ayant une profondeur nulle le long de la ligne des côtes. Les relations de disperion sont fonction du numéro de l'ondulation côtière. La fréquence des ondulations est fixée entre certaines limites. En particulier, la limite inférieure des oscillations à haute fréquence est exprimée en fonction de l'ordre de l'oscillation. La vitesse du groupe d'oscillations à haute fréquence passe par un maximum et tend vers zéro pour des numéros très bas et très élevés de l'ondulation côtière. On montre que la vitesse du groupe est inférieure à la moitié de la vitesse de la phase et toujours inférieure à une vitesse critique qui est fonction des paramètres du plateau continental. Cette vitesse critique est de 26 m/s pour le plateau continental situé au large de Sydney.
    Notes: Summary The theory is presented for high frequency edge waves on a convex exponential profile, having zero depth at the coastline. Dispersion relations are found in terms of the longshore wave number. Certain bounds are determined for the frequency of the waves, in particular, the high frequency waves have a lower frequency bound which is expressed in terms of the order of the wave. The group velocity of the high frequency waves attains a maximum value but tends to zero at very high and very low longshore wave numbers. The group velocity is shown to be less than half the phase velocity and to always be less than a critical velocity which is a function of the shelf parameters. This critical velocity is about 26 m/s for the shelf off Sydney.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Aus Literaturwerten der Viskosität wurde die Mizellgestalt und Hydration des mizellaren Natrium-n-dodecylsulfats in 0,3 mol dm−3 Natriumchloridlösung in der Gegenwart von solubilisiertemn-Oktanol bzw.n-Nonan ermittelt. Vorausgesetzt, daß in der Abwesenheit von Solubilisat sphärische Mizellen gebildet werden, wird die Hydratationszahl pro Monomeres in der Mizelle zu ca. 10–11 berechnet. Die Solubilisierung-vonn-Oktanol bewirkt, daß die Mizellen nicht sphärisch, sondern wahrscheinlich stabförmig werden. Die Mizellen bleiben aber sphärisch, wennn-Nonan solubilisiert wird. Hier wird die Hydratation verringert wegen dichterer Packung der Tensidengruppen (ionische Gruppen) an der Mizellenoberfläche.
    Notes: Abstract Published data are utilised to obtain information concerning micellar shape and hydration from the viscosities of micellar sodiumn-dodecyl sulphate in 0.3 mot dm−3 sodium chloride solution in the presence of solubilisedn-octanol andn-nonane. Assuming spherical micelles are formed in the absence of solubilisate, the hydration number per monomer in the micelle is approximately 10–11. Solubilisation of n-octanol causes the micelles to become non-spherical, probably rod-like. In contrast, when n-nonane is solubilised the micelles remain spherical but hydration is reduced owing to closer packing of the surfactant head-groups at the micelle surface.

    Notes: Abstract The design of a stage to bend materials in a scanning electron-microscope (Stereoscan, Cambridge Scientific Instruments Ltd) is described together with examples of its use in the fracture of composite materials. The bend module, when fitted to a large modular stage, can be used with existing scanning electron microscopes and is capable of bending, under increasing load or cyclic loading conditions, rectangular specimens of a maximum size 44×4×1.5 mm, to a maximum strain of 1.5%. Using the module with a standard display system the non-catastrophic stages of deformation and failure can be followed at higher magnification than has previously been possible. When the module is used in conjunction with a fast scanning and display system, deformation and fracture processes may be recorded at high magnifications while the specimen is being strained.

This paper is an up-to-date review of the types of contrast that can be detected and of the mechanisms that give rise to them.
