Notes: The influence of different types of low and atmospheric pressure plasma on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been studied in terms of changes in molar mass and molar mass distribution. Apart from a variation of plasma gases (oxygen, helium) different types of plasma (microwave, radio frequency, corona discharge) were used for the plasma surface modification. The changes in molar mass and types of functional end groups of lower molar mass products were investigated by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), whereas the high-molar mass fraction was analyzed by means of size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). The formation of crosslinked products during exposure to a helium plasma, which emits preponderately energy-rich and intense ultraviolet radiation, was proved by means of thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF). This method combined with a multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS) detector allows detection of weakly crosslinked polymers and microgels. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The hydrolytic degradation of technical poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was investigated by means of different methods such as size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), viscometry, light-scattering, thin-layer chromatography, end-group titration, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The long-term degradation was simulated by exposing PET filament yarns to aqueous neutral conditions at 90°C for up to 18 weeks. By means of MALDI-MS and thin-layer chromatography, the formation of different oligomers was obtained during polymer degradation. As expected, an ester scission process was found generating acid terminated oligomers (H-[GT]m-OH) and T-[GT]m-OH and ethylene glycol terminated oligomers (H-[GT]m-G), where G is an ethylene glycol unit and T is a terephthalic acid unit. Additionally, the scission of the ester bonds during the chemical treatment led to a strong decrease in the number of cyclic oligomers ([GT]m). The occurrence of di-acid terminated species demonstrated a high degree of degradation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 2183-2192, 1997

Description / Table of Contents: Ceramic surfaces produced by thermal spraying are being increasingly used in the chemical industry.Familiar applications are: coatings on sealing surfaces of chemical equipment, for protection from abrasive wear, possibly with specific running properties for rotating parts, for the manufacture of manmade fibres and filaments. The requirements in regard to the specific surface characteristics of thermally sprayed ceramic coatings are still largely unknown and certain surface effects are difficult to explain. The methods of measurement and the recordable non-destructive examination on the finished component must be improved. In this article the surface structures that are typical for oxidic plasmasprayed coatings and their measurement methods and recording are presented.

Notes: Volatile fatty acids in aqueous media were esterfied in situ with phenyldiazomethane (PDM). Complete esterification was achieved in 3 h at 40°C under continuous stirring of an ether/water system. The process involved immediate transfer of benzyl esters into the organic phase. The separation of benzyl esters mixtures was carried out in glass capillary GC columns. The retention data and FID molar responses were determined for C1 to C6 acid benzyl esters, including 2-methylpropionic, 3-methylbutyric, 2-methylvaleric, and 2-ethylbutyric acid. An unusual relationship was observed between benzyl ester relative molar responses and carbon atom number.

Notes: Twenty eight native vegetable oils were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Generally PAH concentrations were low, but olive oils showed significantly higher contamination by light PAH ranging from 53 to 105.6 μg/kg. Muscle and liver samples of bream from the river Elbe contained little or no detectable amounts of PAH, whereas fresh and canned oysters and mussels showed higher contaminations. Highest PAH concentrations have been determined in “smoked oysters in oil” with 75.8 μg/kg benzo[a] pyrene for the oil and 12.2 μg/kg for the oyster meat.

Notes: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry was used for the characterization of extracted and synthesized oligo(ethylene terephthalate)s. Generally, cyclic oligomers [GT]n could be found in technical yarns and tiles, whereas our synthesized model oligomers mainly consisted of linear chains H—[GT]n—G. In addition, some other distributions could be identified as H—[GT]n—OH and H—[GGT]1—[GT]n-1—G linear oligomers and H—[GGT]1—[GT]n-1 cyclic oligomers, where G is an ethylene glycol unit, GG is a diethylene glycol unit, caused by impurities of ethylene glycol, and T is a terephthalic acid unit. NMR and IR investigations were carried out to verify these results.
