Notes: The ultraviolet absorption spectra of Cadoxen solutions of hydrocellulose and hydrocellulose phenylosazones are described. With solutions of hydrocellulose no simple relationship between D.P. and absorbance was found. Solutions of hydrocellulose phenylosazone in Cadoxen show well-defined maxima at 277 nm and 390 nm and do not change over 1 hr when oxygen is excluded. The absorbance of the phenylosazone at 390 nm may be used to determine the D.P. of the hydrocellulose samples.

Notes: Through the use of pilot plant equipment, transaldolase types I, II, and III (from Candida utilis) have been separated and purified. The procedure includes a time sensitive solvent fractionation below 0°C, ion exchange chromatography, and crystalization. The enzyme yield represents a 41% recovery of crystalline type III and partially purified types I and II.

Notes: The automatic endless belt polymer fractionator utilizes a continuous application and multistage extraction technique. A thin coating of polymer deposited on a slowly moving endless belt which passes through a series of solvent-nonsolvent mixtures of increasing solvent strength is fractionally dissolved. Discussion includes the description of the construction of the apparatus, details and results of fractionations of Neoprene W and polytetramethylene ether glycol, fractionation techniques and subsequent work-up of the fractions, “large scale” preparative fractionations, and general performance characteristics.

Notes: Solutions of hydrocellulose phenylosazone in cadoxen are stable when oxygen is excluded. In the presence of oxygen, the absorption spectrum changes, but the change is partially reversible when nitrogen is bubbled through the oxidized solution. It is probable that a hydroperoxide of the hydrocellulose phenylosazone is formed initially and is then decomposed by the basic solvent. The work indicates the importance of using deoxygenated solvents and working in an oxygen-free atmosphere when preparing cadoxen solutions of hydrocellulose phenylosazone.

Notes: A brief description of endocytosis and exocytosis is followed by a discussion of the experimental approaches to the study of the initial events of endocytosis, the possible involvement of microfilaments, and in particular the possible role of membrane lipids in the events of membrane fusion. Recently developed model systems are also discussed.
