Notes: Velocity analysis of reflection seismic data has increased in popularity with petroleum exploration personnel to such an extent that it now constitutes a significant tool in the routine digital processing program. One drawback to such an analysis is its computational cost, resulting from the numerous mathematical calculations required by a digital computer to extract comprehensive velocity information. The subject algorithm affords a computational cost saving of approximately one order of magnitude over a straightforward summational type velocity analysis with little sacrifice in accuracy. The utility of the algorithm is demonstrated on some Offshore Louisiana seismic data and a comparison of the results reveals that they are almost identical with a conventional velocity analysis. The algorithm is based on the concept that a normal-moveout pattern of time shifts may be accurately applied over a considerable span of zero-offset times to a CDP trace gather, rather than only at a single zero-offset time. With each application however, the rms-velocity associated with the moveout pattern is different. A specific relationship which associates an rms-velocity with a zero-offset time for the same moveout time delay pattern is approximated by numerical simulation studies on a digital computer.

Notes: Summary Glucose inhibits the accumulation ofl-phenylalanine by rat intestinal slices during 45-minute incubations. In the presence of DNP (which alone abolishes all active transport), glucose, but not galactose, significantly stimulates amino-acid uptake. However, during short incubations, glucose inhibits the entry of phenylalamine into the tissue, both in the presence and absence of DNP.

Notes: Abstract Z-trend maps are a simplified lineprinter version of spatially filtered maps designed to give a quick visual appraisal of trends. The printout shows a “yes-no” configuration by a printed character or a blank so that the map has a conspicuous pattern. This pattern reflects the presence, position, and trend of the desired features. If a reasonable symbol density ratio is used the results can be visually pleasing thus enhancing trend recognition. Z-trending can be adapted to any map with stationary properties but is most easily applied to data that have been filtered with a bandpass operator.

Notes: Summary In a three phase system the shape of the draining film beneath a liquid drop of phase 1 approaching a deformable liquid-liquid interface between phases 2 and 3 is not spherical when the densities of the phases differ. The drop dimensions have been predicted theoretically by splitting the drop into a sessile part and a pendant part. These dimensions agree with those experimentally obtained for a pure system and also when surface active agent is present in the draining film if the interfacial tension is assumed to approach its minimum equilibrium value. After rupture of the draining film of phase 2 the drop may remain at the interface or pass through it depending on the magnitude of the bouyancy and interfacial forces. Alternatively the drop may pass straight through the interface into phase 3 and become completely enveloped by a film of phase 2; when this finally ruptures a small drop of phase 2 returns to the interface.

Notes: Summary Arthrobacter globiformis andPseudomonas fluorescens were grown separately and together in flasks containing soil sterilized by gamma-irradiation. If the soil was held at 60% of its waterholding capacity (W.H.C.) and 25°C the viable cell yield of the 2 organisms in pure culture was approximately equal in 4 days while in mixed culture neither organism predominated and the total yield was about the same as in either pure culture. The pseudomonad dominated the mixed cultures when the incubation temperature was 10°C, when the soil was saturated and when glucose was added to the soil. The arthrobacter dominated the mixed culture when soil moisture was decreased to 40% W.H.C. The 10-day oxygen uptake by the 2 organisms grown together in sterile soil was much less than that shown by an inoculum prepared from a soil dilution.A. globiformis took up less oxygen when grown in the sterile soil than didP. fluorescens. In these short-term experimentsA. globiformis did not demonstrate competitive capabilities which would explain its more frequent occurrence in unamended soil thanP. fluorescens.
