Notes: Abstract The measurements of the hard X-ray spectrum of Sco X-1 in the energy interval 20–150 keV in three balloon flights from Hyderabad, India are reported. These results show conclusively that the spectrum of Sco X-1 is very flat in the energy interval 40–150 keV and the measured fluxes beyond 60 keV are several orders of magnitude higher than those expected on the basis of an extrapolation of bremsstrahlung spectrum from a thin hot plasma at a temperature corresponding tokT=5 keV, which is applicable for Sco X-1 for energies 〈40 keV. The results are compared with those of other investigators of hard X-rays from Sco X-1, and the implication of the results is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract Observations of the proton, helium, (C, N, O) and Fe-group nuclei fluxes made during the large 4 August 1972 solar particle event are presented. The results show a small, but significant variation of the composition of multiply-charged nuclei as a function of energy in the energy region above 10 MeV nucleon−1. In particular, the He/(C, N, O) abundance ratio varies by a factor ∼ 2 between 10 and 50 MeV nucleon−1 and the Fe-group/(C, N, O) ratio suggests a similar variation. Abundance ratios from the 4 August 1972 event are compared as a function of energy with ratios measured in other solar events to show that several of the earlier results are consistent with an energy variation like that observed in August 1972, while certain other events must have had a substantially different dependence of composition on energy. At energies ≳50 MeV nucleon−1, the He/(C, N, O) abundance ratio for August 1972 is consistent with all earlier measurements made above that energy which suggests that variations may vanish at high energies.

Notes: Abstract Utilizing the facts (i) that the number of particles in the many-boson system is conserved and (ii) that the Hamiltonian is Hermitian, a new set of variables comprising “action” and “angle” variables has been introduced. These variables are conjugate in the “mean” and provide a rigorous approach to introducing phase variables for “total-number-conserving many-boson systems.”

Notes: Summary Elastic waves radiated by a finite circular disc source are compared for two models by treating it as the limit of an explosion inside a cavity in the form of a circular cylinder of small height or an oblate spheroid of small minor axis.

Notes: Summary The propagation of Rayleigh waves in the earth is investigated in the period range of about 60 to 590 seconds. It has been shown that a set of earth-flattening approximations can be used to transform the heterogeneous spherical earth into plane-layered earth on which the dispersion computations by matrix method can be applied effectively to describe the fundamental mode of spheroidal oscillations involving the crust and the mantly only.

Notes: Summary The present paper is concerned with the transmission of elastic waves through a second-order fluid layer sandwiched between homogeneous elastic media having identical properties. It is concluded that the transmission ratio increases with the increasing absolute values of visco-elastic co-efficient and also with the wavelength of the wave transmitted.

Notes: Summary Elastic wave propagation problem has been studied in the composite medium — a gravitating liquid layer overlying an elastic half-space. Assuming moving normal pressure load on the free surface, an attempt has been made to study the order of disturbance on the earth's surface. In the discussion asymptotic values of the displacement, components have been considered for small values of the parameter.

Notes: Summary The paper describes a new portable highly sensitive dual-frequency electromagnetic prospecting unit designed for detailedem surveys based on moving source compensation method. Employing horizontal-horizontal coil profiling, the unit is capable of working on a source-receiver separation of 330 feet (ninety meters) on both frequencies of 500 cycles per sec and 1500 cycles per sec to an accuracy of ±1%. The presence of secondary field characterised by two related components ‘in-phase’ and ‘out-of-phase’ are measured accurately to define the conductor characteristics. An unique provision is made for compensating the phase-shifts in the presence of medium to poor conductors, such as conductive overburden or relatively disseminated ore mineralisation.

Notes: Summary Interactions of cationic dye methylene blue with small polyanions like inositol hexasulfate, adenosine-triphosphate, ammonium molybdate, potassium ferro- and ferricyanide have been studied spectrophotometrically and conductometrically to ascertain the chromotropic characters of these polyanions. Results show that while almost all of them bind the dye stoichiometrically, none of them except ammonium molybdate is a chromotrope in the sense in which heparin, chondroitin sulfate etc. are. Inositol hexasulfate induces an intermediate spectra, though not perfectly metachromatic as is the case with inositol hexaphosphate. It is concluded that a chromotrope need not be a macromolecule to induce metachromasia in a dye solution, but the minimum number of charges per polyanion to give it a chromotropic character will vary with the nature of the polyanion.
