    Notes: Abstract Molten bisulphates form an interesting class of low-temperature fused salts which quench to form glasses; some technical and theoretical applications of these systems are discussed. The NaHSO4KHSO-4 eutectic (46.5% KHSO4, m.p. 125°C,T g 25°C) is easy to study since at lower temperatures decomposition of the melt is retarded and supercooling readily occurs. The solvent properties of this eutectic towards both inorganic and organic solutes have been investigated. The oxidation states available to transition and post-transition metals were studied spectrophotometrically and voltametrically; the results show a very restricted pattern of redox chemistry. The (abbreviated) electrochemical series is V(V)/V(IV)〉Mn(III)/Mn(II)〉H(I)/H2(O)〉Ag(I)/Ag(O)〉Mo(VI)/Mo(V)〉 Hg(I)/Hg(O)〉Cu(II)/Cu(O)〉Zn(II)/Zn(O). The Hammett acidity function,H 0, was measured as in the range −1 to −2. Various factors influencing redox reactions in the melt are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The larval stages of Callianassa kraussi Stebb. were previously unknown. Larvae were bred out in the laboratory and found to be incapable of swimming. There are two larval stages, lasting 3 to 5 days in sea water of 34 to 35‰ S at 20 °C. Observations under simulated field conditions in the laboratory, and in the field—where burrow casts were made using a polyester resin, indicated that the larvae metamorphose to the first post-larval stage in the parent burrow, and then burrow directly into the wall of the parent burrow.

    Notes: Conclusions The following conclusions may be drawn from the study: 1. It is possible to estimate the drawing power of stores through information on the origin of customers gathered in those stores. 2. The type of measures of distance decay which were estimated conform with Zipf's principle of least effort and as theorized by Huff's formulation of the standard gravity model. 3. Super market drawing power is affected by location. 4. A simplex algorithm for function fitting is an efficient and effective method of estimating the distance effect exponent. 5. It may be possible to use this technique to study the usage of other people-based activities and systems of activities.

Die Annahme eines aktiven Prozesses als hauptsächliche Erklärung für das differenzierte Verhalten von Na und diesen multivalenten Kationen im Knochenin vivo wird auf Grund dieser Beobachtung überflüssig.
    Notes: Abstract A column constructed of defatted bone powder can discriminate between22Na and58Sr or47Ca. Sodium is taken up, and eluted, from such a column at a more rapid rate than the other two isotopes. These observations make it unnecessary to assume the existence of an active process as a major explanation for the differential behaviour of Na and these multivalent cations in bonein vivo.

    Notes: Abstract The location of highly reiterated nucleotide sequences on the chromosomes has been studied by the technique of in situ hybridisation between the DNA of either Drosophila melanogaster salivary gland chromosomes or mouse chromosomes and tritium labelled complementary RNA (c-RNA) transcribed in vitro from appropriate templates with the aid of DNA dependent RNA polymerase extracted from Micrococcus lysodeikticus. The location of the hybrid material was identified by autoradiography after RNase treatment. — When Drosophila c-RNA, transcribed from whole DNA, was annealed with homologous salivary chromosomes in the presence of formamide the well defined labelling was confined to the chromocentre. With heat instead of formamide denaturation there was evidence of discontinuous labelling in various chromosome regions as well, apparently associated with banding. Xenopus ribosomal RNA showed no evidence of annealing to Drosophila chromosomes with the comparatively short exposure times used here. — When mouse satellite DNA was used as template the resulting c-RNA showed no hybridisation to Drosophila chromosomes but, when annealed with mouse chromosomes, the centromeric regions were intensely labelled. The interphase nuclei showed several distinct regions of high activity which suggested aggregation of centromeric regions of both homologous and non-homologous chromosomes. The results of annealing either c-RNA or labelled satellite DNA to homologous chromosomes were virtually indistinguishable. Incubation of Drosophila c-RNA with mouse chromosomes provided no evidence of localisation of grains. — It is inferred that both in mouse and Drosophila the centromeric regions of all chromosomes are enriched in highly reiterated sequences. This may be a general phenomenon and it might be tentatively suggested that the highly reiterated sequences play some role in promoting the close physical approximation of homologous and non-homologous chromosomes or chromosome regions to facilitate regulation of function.

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that a DC energised CO2-N2-He laser system leads to a lower loss of material by evaporation than a comparable AC system when applied to oxide crystal growth. The reasons for this behaviour are discussed and a method for minimising evaporation using an AC system is described.

    Notes: Abstract The infratidal zonation of animals in a 35 m deep fjord-like South African estuary is described. The barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin and the bivalve Musculus virgiliae Barnard form the uppermost zone and extend to a depth of 9 m. The oyster Crassostrea margaritacea (Lam.) forms a zone between 1 and 3 m depth while the sponge Grantessa ramosa (Haeckel) occurs between 3 and 7 m. The tubiculous polychaete Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel is the only species found below 10 m, and attains a depth of 33 m. In the wet season (summer) the surface salinity dropped to 2‰ and temperatures rose to 24°C. In the dry season (winter) surface salinity rose to 24‰ and temperatures dropped to 16°C. Salinity and temperature of deep water (6 to 33 m) were more stable and varied only between 32.5 and 35‰ and between 19.6° and 20.5°C, respectively. In June, water below 12 m was 50 to 60% saturated with oxygen but this declined to less than 5% saturation in January.

    Notes: Summary ATPase activity sensitive to ouabain was examined in both cardiac (ventricular) and skeletal (tibialis anterior) muscle cells of the mouse. Short-term fixation was combined with incubation in a medium designed to reduce artifactual deposition of lead phosphate. With incubation medium containing Na+ and K+, Pb3 (PO4)2 precipitate appears throughout the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) of both cardiac and skeletal cells. The precipitate generally is heavier in the junctional SR than in network SR, although the two regions are interconnected. Ouabain (1 mM) eliminates activity in the network SR of myocardial cells, but only reduces it in skeletal muscle cells. The total ATPase activity of junctional cisternae of the SR of myocardial cells does not appear to be reduced by ouabain, whereas the activity of the terminal cisternae of skeletal muscle is substantially diminished. The use of an incubation medium containing zero K+ reduces the level of activity, but not consistently. These data suggest that (Na+, K+)-ATPase is present in the network SR of both cardiac and skeletal muscle cells, and probably in the terminal cisternae of skeletal muscle cells.
