Notes: Abstract The analysis of lunar laser ranging data requires very accurate calculations of the lunar physical librations. Libration terms are given which arise from the additive and planetary terms in the lunar theory. The large size of the recently discovered terms due to third degree gravitational harmonics will allow some of these harmonics to be measured, in addition toβ andγ, by laser ranging to the Moon. Combining the laser ranging determinations ofβ = 630.6 ± 0.5 × 10−6 andγ = 226.4 ± 3.0 × 10−6 with lunar orbiter measurements ofC 20 andC 22 givesC/MR 2=0.395 -0.010 +0.006 . Numerical integration promises to be an effective method of calculating librations. Comparison of numerical integrations with analytic series indicates that the calculation of the series due to third and fourth degree harmonics is not yet as accurate as the more extensively developed second degree terms.

Notes: Abstract Experiments are reported on spherical PMMA domes with thickness variations. The results were correlated with the parameter a 2/Rt where I is a mean thickness based on equivalent energy. The curvature effect could be adequately represented by a published formulae. Crack angles and failure stresses for tubes broken in torsion were compared with the maximum hoop stress and minimum strain energy theories of Sih.

Notes: Abstract Experiments are described in which the fracture toughness,K c, of PMMA has been determined in the temperature range −190 to + 80° C and over the crack speed range of 10−2 to 102 mm sec−1. Single edge notch tension was used for instability measurements but the other data were obtained using the double torsion method. In the range −80 to + 80°C the variations inK c may be described in terms of modulus changes and a constant crack opening displacement criterion. Crack instabilities are correlated with isothermal-adiabatic transitions at the crack tip. Below −80° C there is an inverted rate dependence associated with thermal effects during post-instability crack propagation.

Notes: Abstract Previous work on impact testing has shown that the energy/unit area (w) normally measured in notched impact tests is dependent on specimen geometry. A fracture mechanical analysis has now been developed to account for the observed dependence ofw on notch size. A correction factor (φ) has been derived to accommodate notch effects and this allows for the calculation of the strain energy release-rateG directly from the measured fracture energies. Tests on PMMA have shown that “corrected” results are independent of specimen geometry and theG c for PMMA has been evaluated as 1.04 × 103 J m−2. The experimental results show that there is an additional energy term which must be accounted for and this has been interpreted here as being due to kinetic energy losses in the specimens. A conservation of momentum analysis has allowed a realistic correction term to be calculated to include kinetic energy effects and the normalized experimental results show complete consistency between all the geometries used in the test series. It is concluded that the analysis resolves many of the difficulties associated with notched impact testing and provides for the calculation of realistic fracture toughness parameters.

Notes: A series of tests have been conducted to measure the effects of fatigue loading on environmental stress crazing in PMMA. Testing in methanol has shown that long crazes are grown prior to fracture in the same manner as previously observed for constant-load conditions. An analytical model which had been used to describe craze kinetics in terms of environmental flow within the craze for static loads has been amended to account for the variable loads and gives excellent prediction of craze speeds under numerous types of loading. The correlation of theory and experimental data for this second case suggests that environmental crazing is controlled mainly by the way in which the hostile environment is able to flow through the voided structure of the craze. A brief description of the effects of varying the cyclic frequency is also given in an attempt to provide guidelines for future research.

Notes: Abstract Wöhler-type rotating bending fatigue tests have been performed on PVC cantilever specimens containing various sharp and blunt notches of known geometries. An attempt has been made to analyse the data obtained using linear elastic fracture mechanics concepts. Results from the sharp-notched specimens show a good correlation on a stress intensity factor basis and a fatigue limit is revealed. For blunt notches a stress intensity factor had to be calculated allowing for small flaws at the notch root, and some measure of correlation of the stress intensity factor at the fatigue limit for the various specimens is obtained.
