Notizen: This paper is concerned with the development of a computational algorithm for the solution of the uncoupled, quasi-static boundary value problem for a linear viscoelastic solid undergoing thermal and mechanical deformation. The method evolves from a finite element discretization of a stationary value problem, leading to the solution of a system of linear integral equations determining the motion of the solid. An illustrative example is included.

Notizen: A limitation of most plate and shell discrete elements now in use is the shape of their undeformed geometry. Typically, the plan form of these elements is a straight-sided triangle or quadrilateral that linearly approximates the undeformed geometry while often using higher-order polynomials to approximate the deformed geometry. This modelling difference leads to inefficiencies that can be eliminated, as demonstrated by a new parametric discrete element based entirely on bicubic Hermite polynomials. This representation of element geometry corresponds to the bicubic Coon's surface patch widely used in design, which allows a common mathematical model for design and analysis. Consideration is given to automating the generation of these patches. Solutions are presented for several plate bending and plate stretching problems. The solutions are in good agreement with closed-form solutions and photoelastic results in the case of a stress-concentration problem. These data demonstrate that the new parametric discrete element maintains solution accuracy for plates with curved boundaries.

Notizen: Development of the secondary palate in Swiss white mouse embroyos was studied from age nine-and-one-half days in utero to the stage of mesenchymal coalescence in the secondary palate (approximately fifteen-and-one-half days). The greatest changes observed occur in the mesenchyme. At early stages, mesenchymal cells underlying oral ectoderm of the head are few and only occasionally contact the ectoderm. Electron micrographs show large intercellular spaces between the ectodermal cells. As embryogenesis continues, the mesenchymal cells become more numerous, closer to each other and closer to the epithelium. Just prior to horizontal transposition of shelves, the mesenchymal cells spread farther from each other and from the palatal epithelium and epithelium of the palatal tip becomes stretched. Ultrastructurally the intercellular spaces between epithelial cells of the palate tip have become much smaller. Some mitochondria in some epithelial cells are swollen and have clear matrices and distorted cristae. The shelves become horizontal and meet in the midpalate. Cells with degeneration bodies are seen in the epithelial seam. The seam undergoes autolysis and is replaced by mesenchyme. The morphological changes described, particularly in the mesenchyme, may play an important role in determining the effect of various teratogens at different stages of palatal development. The changes in both mesenchyme and epithelial cells in the later stages may constitute part of the process of preparing shelves for fusion as postulated by Pourtois ('66).

Notizen: An analysis is made of diffusion and chemical reaction in an isothermal multicomponent fluid. Transient gas-phase reaction in a one-dimensional nonflow system and steady state gas-phase or surface reaction in a tubular reactor are considered. The equations are linearized around some state away from equilibrium. Multicomponent and binary diffusivity expressions are used and a series of reactions of varying complexity is considered. The possibility of oscillations increases as the complexity of the reactions is increased. These oscillations occur with time in the nonflow system and with space-time in the tubular reactor, and it appears that any reacting mixture which oscillates in one of these two systems will also oscillate in the other.

Notizen: Interaction of macromixing and micromixing in microbiological flow reactors based on a kinetic model of the Michaelis-Menten type has been treated by considering two general types of flow systems: the system of n continuous stirred-tank reactors in series (n-CSTR's in series) and the series combination of a plug-flow reactor and a continuous stirred-tank reactor. Systematic schemes to describe the micromixing conditions of a reactor system are presented. Additional micromixing states are considered besides those proposed by Kramers and those proposed by Zwietering if the systems are employed as empirical models of a flow system. When the number of stirred-reactor units in the system of n-CSTR's in series is small, micromixing has a significant effect on the growth processes. As the number of reactor units increases, the micromixing effect on the growth processes decreases. The effect of micromixing is also important for a system described by a series combination of a plug-flow reactor and a continuous stirred reactor. In addition, the exit concentrations from the system having the same residence time distribution and the same degree of segregation may be different from each other. Information obtained in this study is pertinent in the design of biological flow reactors and sewage treatment systems.

Notizen: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of seed crystal size on the rate of nucleation in batch stirred-tank crystallizers. Experimental results confirm the existence of such an effect. Nucleation rate data are correlated with a second-order polynomial in seed crystal size; coefficients of the correlation are functions of the solute-solvent system, crystallizer geometry, and mixing conditions. The empirical correlation is incorporated into a population balance model for determining the nucleation rate in multi-seed crystallizers. The observed results are explained in terms of variations in impact energy, circulation frequency, and target efficiency.
