    Description: A rotatable central component smoothing method is used to analyze rotating gear noise spectra. A matrix is formulated in which the randomized rows correspond to various tests and the columns to factor values. Canonical analysis of the obtained regression equation permits the calculation of optimal speed and load at a previous assigned noise level.

    Description: The ability to fabricate design critical and man-rated aerospace structures using materials near the limits of their capabilities requires a comprehensive and dependable assurance program. The quality assurance program must rely heavily on nondestructive testing methods for thorough inspection to assess properties and quality of hardware items. A survey of nondestructive testing methods is presented to provide space program managers, supervisors and engineers who are unfamiliar with this technical area with appropriate insight into the commonly accepted nondestructive testing methods available, their interrelationships, used, advantages and limitations. Primary emphasis is placed on the most common methods: liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, radiography, ultrasonics and eddy current. A number of the newer test techniques including thermal, acoustic emission, holography, microwaves, eddy-sonic and exo-electron emission, which are beginning to be used in applications of interest to NASA, are also discussed briefly.

    Description: A three-phase helical induction electromagnetic (EM) pump has been designed and built. This pump was designed for use as the boiler-feed pump of a potassium Rankine-cycle space electric power system. The pump is constructed of high temperature materials including a T-111 duct, Hiperco 27 magnetic material, nickel clad silver conductor wire, and a completely inorganic insulation system. The pump is designed to deliver 3.25 lb/sec potassium at 1000 F with a developed head of 240 psi while being cooled by 800 F NaK. At these conditions, the overall pump efficiency is expected to be 18%.

    Description: Preliminary design and reliability analysis conducted on the turbopump for the NERVA 75,000 full flow cycle engine, indicated that the turbopump bearings were the most critical turbopump parts in meeting the 10 hour life at the required turbopump reliability of .99978. The analysis revealed that significant reductions (approximately a factor of 3.25) in bearing loads would be achieved by fabricating the rotating parts from titanium in lieu of A286 or 718. This is basically due to the difference in density of the materials and the resulting mass effect on the location of the first and second stick mode critical speeds. For the selected rotor configuration, the lighter material has a first critical speed at approximately 36,000 rpm, while that of the heavier material has a first critical at approximately 27,000 rpm. As the operating range of the turbopump is from 0 to 30,000 rpm, the heavier material would have a stick mode critical in the operating range.

    Description: An experimental evaluation of mainshaft seals for small gas turbine engines was conducted with shaft speeds to 213 m/s (700 ft/sec), air pressures to 148 Newtons per square centimeter abs. (215 psia), and air temperatures to 412k(282 F). A radial face seal incorporating self-acting geometry for lift augmentation was evaluated. In addition, three conventional carbon seal types (face, circumferential segmented, and rotating ring) were run for comparison. Test results indicated that the conventional seals used in this evaluation may not be satisfactory in future advanced engines because of excessive air leakage. On the other hand, the self-acting face seal was shown to have the potential capability of limiting leakages to one-half that of the conventional face seals and one-fifth that of conventional ring seals. A 150-hour endurance test of the self-acting face seal was conducted.

    Description: The continuing efforts in upscaling to produce larger diameter Al/B tubes are described. While the basic methodology remains unchanged, the larger volume of acrylic binder material and its removal by dissolution in toluene had to be performed by dynamic scrubbing. Similarly, the boron and MCF continuous length requirements increased when a 6 foot long by 7 inches wide mat was needed. These modifications and associated problems are described fully with schematics. Also included are seven experiments conducted to prepare larger tubes. The thermal profile, drawing speeds, and furnace positions in the draw bench bay are presented along with metallographic evidence of composite cross sections.

    Description: The failure mode analysis (FMA) is described as a design tool to predict and improve product reliability. The objectives of the failure mode analysis are presented as they influence component design, configuration selection, the product test program, the quality assurance plan, and engineering analysis priorities. The detailed mechanics of performing a failure mode analysis are discussed, including one suggested format. Some practical difficulties of implementation are indicated, drawn from experience with preparing FMAs on the nuclear rocket engine program.

    Description: Proper evaluation of the effects of bearing assembly flexibility on the attitude stability of dual-spin spacecraft may explain the observed anomalies in the motion of a recently launched satellite. A convenient, but approximate, expression with which to gauge these effects is presented, as in an example of a possible application of this expression in a design role.
