    Notes: The Oberhautchen of scales from the dorsal, parietal, and ventral regions of Sceloporus occidentalis (Iguanidae), Gerrhonotus multicarinatus (Anguinidae), and Anniella pulchra (Anniellidae) were examined with a scanning electron microscope. At low magnification, all scales of S. occidentalis exhibit well-defined outlines of cells belonging to the Oberhautchen layer and the previously overlying clear layer. The dorsal and parietal cells of this species exhibit a minutely dentate Oberhautchen that forms tooth-like spinules 0.2 to 0.5 μ long and arranged in irregular rows. Minute pits 0.1 to 0.3 μ in diameter characterize the Oberhautchen of a ventral scale.Cell outlines are not evident on the scales of G. multicarinatus. The Oberhautchen of dorsal and parietal scales of this species is prominently laminated. Laminae are less prominent on scales of the lateral fold, and no intrinsic surface structure is evident on a ventral scale. In contrast, the fossorial anguinomorph Anniella pulchra exhibits Oberhautchen surfaces with practically no intrinsic microornamentation. However, what appear to be outlines of Oberhautchen cells are visible on the dorsal and ventral scales.These observations suggest that modifications of Oberhautchen microornamentation may have evolved to reduce friction with the substrate or other scales. The lack of pronounced microornamentation of the Oberhautchen on some body scales may indicate that a complex interdigitation between clear layer and Oberhautchen cells is not essential to the sloughing process.

    Notes: Boundary-layer solutions are given for heat and mass transfer at mobile interfaces. The results are asymptotically valid for small thermal and material diffusivities, or for short exposure times. Phase breakup and coalescence are formally included, but Marangoni effects are not. Effects of rapid mass transfer, chemical reactions, and variable boundary conditions are evaluated. The treatment is a generalization of the penetration and surface-renewal theories.

    Notes: The effect of side-wall friction on the uniformity of packing of beds in compression-permeability cells is examined. A large portion of pressure applied to the top of a compressible bad is absorbed in wall friction, resulting in a nonuniformly packed bed. A simplified analysis of wall friction and its effect on porosity and permeability is presented.All experimenters involived in flow through porous media are urged to examine the effects of stress distribution on the structure and uniformity of the packing. In general, compressible beds of small particles will be strongly affected by the walls.

    Notes: The theory of homogeneous nucleation of bubbles is combined with an expression, for their rate of growth in elastomers to obtain approximate expressions for calculating the number of bubbles formed under a high degree of supersaturation. Experimental results are given for several elastomers with argon as the dissolved gas under a variety of foaming conditions. The theory adequately describes the manner in which the number of bubbles formed depends on the temperature, surface tension of the polymer, and permeability of the dissolved gas.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Hydrolysestabilität einiger thermoplastischer Poly(ester-urethan)-Elastomerer in Abhängigkeit vom molekularen Aufbau wird untersucht. Entscheidend für den hydrolytischen Abbau dieser Polymeren ist das Auftreten von Carboxylgruppen. Es werden Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, diesen Abbau zu verringern, so z. B. durch Zusatz von Poly(carbodiimiden). Abschließend werden die Hydrolysestabilität von thermoplastischen Poly(ester-urethan)-Elastomeren untersucht, die Poly-(∊-Caprolacton) und Poly(hexamethylencarbonat) als Glykolkomponente enthalten.
    Notes: This paper reviews several types of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers, and the unique properties these polymers have. In discussing the hydrolysis stability of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers the suitability of these polymers for such study was pointed out. A relationship between poly(ester-urethane) composition in terms of methylene group concentration, hardness and chain stiffness, and hydrolysis stability was shown. The dominant role of polyurethane acid number in thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane) hydrolysis stability was demonstrated and the origin of this unexpected acid number was discussed. The pronounced stabilizing action of added poly(carbodiimide) in thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane) hydrolysis was shown, as well as the severe destabilizing action of a carboxylic acid, stearic acid. The hydrolysis stabilities of thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane) elastomers based on poly(∊-caprolactone) glycol and on poly(hexamethylene carbonate) glycol were also described.
