Notes: Abstract A statistical examination of the relationship between barometric pressure and the incidence of perforated duodenal- and prepyloric ulcer (1953–1968) shows that the velocity of the changes in barometric pressure seems to be the only really important biotropic factor, and that old patients seem more "sensitive" to these changes than young ones, i.e. the faster the changes in barometric pressure the greater the biological effect.

Notes: Summary A study of the excitation of backward and forward precessional motion of rotors is presented. It is shown that if the rotor is supported in bearings with rotational symmetry, a rotating unbalance of the shaft cannot excite backward precessions, but if the bearings have even the slightest anisotropy, backward synchronous precessions are excited just as in the case of forward precessional motions. However, internal damping forces have a marked effect in reducing the amplitudes of the backward precessions. A rotating unbalanced non-uniform continuous circular shaft supported by anisotropic flexible bearings is studied. The governing equations of motion are derived taking into account the effects of transverse shear, gyroscopic moments, and internal and external damping.

Notes: Summary The paper presents a study of the non-synchronous, self-excited whirl of continuous rotors caused by internal damping forces and by hydrodynamic bearing-film forces. Taking into account gyroscopic effects, the effect of shear on bending, and external damping, the equations of motion are derived by the variational principle. By means of two mode expansions simple expressions are obtained for the limit of stability and the corresponding whirling frequency that are valid for small values of the velocity dependent forces. Numerical methods are used to obtain better approximations to the limits of stability and the whirling frequencies. The results show that for large values of internal and external damping forces and gyroscopic moments, the widely used two-mode approximation may be greatly in error. It is found that if the limit of stability is raised by adding external damping to the rotor system, then even a small amount of internal damping may considerably reduce the limit of stability. In accordance with experimental work done by other authors, it is found that for certain damping conditions a second stability region exists.

Notes: Summary Head blastemas in regeneratingDugesia tigrina (Planaria) have been studied light microscopically and electron microscopically. Acid phosphatase activity has been followed in early blastemas using a light microscopical cytochemical method. The possibilities of a collagen synthesis inhibiting substance α-α′-dipyridyl in analyzing fibrillogenesis in planarians have been explored. Following a brief discussion of the neoblast concept the general organization and characteristics of the blastema are described. Regeneration of the muscle-connective tissue filament system including the subepidermal membrane is analyzed in detail. It is stressed that the muscle cells, the filamentous sheaths and the subepidermal membrane in planarians should be visualized as a mutually dependent, integrated system. The hypothesis is proposed that neoblasts differentiate into myoblasts which both synthesize myofilaments and collagen. Collagen forms the filaments of the subepidermal membrane-muscle sheath system. No certain interference with collagen synthesis and secretion could be demonstrated in the experiments involving α-α′-dipyridyl. There was no evidence for significant changes in the activity and pattern of acid phosphatase during early stages of regeneration. The problems concerning the existence of neoblasts, their participation in regeneration and their origin (stock cell or result of a dedifferentiation process) are discussed.

Notes: Summary Through the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques two simple brominated phenols, 2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxybenzyl alcohol (lanosol) and 3,5-dibromo-p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, were identified in an axenically cultured bluegreen alga, Calothrix brevissima. The alga was grown in a mineral medium supplemented with 1% glucose and 0.075% NaBr for 3 weeks. The culture filtrate contained two tribrominated phenols, 2,3,5-tribromo-p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol and 2,3,5-tribromo-p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and traces of lanosol.

Notes: Summary A fluorescent dye (8-anilino-1-naphthalene-sulphonic acid), which gives no fluorescence, or only a weak one, when added to submerged grown mycelium of the hymenomycete Boletus variegatus, is found to result in a marked increase of fluorescence if the organism is treated with fatty acids. The increased fluorescence is dependent on the presence of undissociated acid molecules as well as on the chain length of the acid. The effect is not due to the acidic character of the molecules, but is highly dependent on lipophilic properties of the substances. Consequently, the fatty acids introduce changes in the characteristics of the cytoplasmic membrane probably as a result of interactions with lipophilic parts of the membrane. The paper finally discusses the contribution of the present results to the elucidation of the influence mechanism of fatty acids in regard to leaking and respiration

Notes: Summary Epinephrine caused a dose dependent increase in the electrical potential difference across the mouse parotid acinar cell membrane (hyperpolarization). Norepinephrine, synephrine and acetylcholine also caused membrane hyperpolarization. This hyperpolarization was not abolished by ouabain (1mm) and was enhanced in the absence of extracellular potassium. In constrast, the β-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol and its isomer metaproterenol caused membrane depolarization, this effect was blocked by propranolol (5 μm). In the presence of the α-adrenoceptor blocking agent phentolamine (10 μm), epinephrine stimulation also resulted in membrane depolarization while acetylcholine still hyperpolarized the cell membrane. The membrane effect of epinephrine (hyperpolarization) or isoproterenol (depolarization) was at least partly retained during superfusion of the parotid gland segments with Ca2+-free solution containing EGTA (10−4 m) at a time when the resting membrane potential was reduced to 50% of its control value as a result of the extracellular Ca2+ deprivation.

Notes: Summary Autoradiographs of mouse ovaries prepared after pulse-labelling with 3H-thymidine at 4-hourly intervals over a 24-hour period show, that in the early stages of follicle development there is a diurnal variation in the number of granulosa cells synthesizing DNA. This is not found in later stages. The diurnal variations are correlated with low proliferation rates of the cell populations and with growth fractions below one. It is concluded, that diurnal variations in the number of granulosa cells synthesizing DNA are due to variations in the growth fractions of the granulosa cell populations.
