Notes: A one-centre CI wave function for HeH+ reported by Stuart and Matsen for 0.1 ≤ R ≤ 5.0 has been analysed in detail from the viewpoint of molecular formation. Further, by means of a natural orbital analysis, it was possible to obtain some measure of the electron correlation contained within such wave functions for various R values. These effects were illustrated by means of a series of difference maps for the electron density. One- and two-particle expectation values were obtained as a function of R. Thus, it was possible to study several aspects of the influence of the proton on the electron charge cloud as we pass from He through to the united atom Li+. The occupation numbers within the natural expansions were compared with those which arise from a similar analysis of a two-centre wave function for HeH+. The “character” of such wave functions for HeH+, and also for He and Li+, were analysed and compared.

Notes: A numerical solution algorithm employing the finite element concept of solid mechanics is derived for the transient laminar two-dimensional flow of an incompressible viscous fluid. Through dependent variable transformation, the problem is uniformly recast into the solution of a quasi-linear elliptic boundary value-problem, for which the finite element solution theory is established. The algorithm is uniquely user-oriented in accepting the generalized elliptic boundary condition specification of any non-coordinate-surface solution do main closure segment and on employing an arbitrarily irregular computational latticc. Numerical results are presented for several problems in internal flow illustrating solution accuracy, convergence, versatility and the ability to predict imbedded regions of recirculating flow.

Notes: Comparisons have been made of the weights of the suprarenals of 525 mature female dogs in dioestrus, oestrus, pregnancy and lactation. Tables and graphs show that there was a slight increase in the size of the suprarenals during oestrus. There was hypertrophy of both the cortex and the medulla in the oestrous dogs. Only slight increase was shown in the weights of the glands of pregnant animals when the net body weight was considered and no increase when the total body weight was used in the study. There was no hypertrophy of the glands of lactating animals. There was only a slight variation in the seasonal occurrence of oestrus. From 34 to 37% of the total numbers of mature females examined in the seasons were found to be in oestrus. From 13 to 16% of the total numbers were found to be pregnant.

Notes: An attempt has been made to rationalize the variables in the preparation procedure of Loeb-Sourirajan-type reverse-osmosis membranes. The quaternary phase diagram of the system cellulose acetate-acetone-formamide-water was determined and has proved a useful tool in the discussion of membrane structures and properties. A mechanism based on differences in the precipitation rate of the polymer during the membrane formation process has been suggested to explain the observed asymmetry in the membrane structure. The porosity of the membrane has been ascribed to the relative rates of water entering and solvent leaving the cast film. The effects of the casting solution composition, the evaporation time, the wash bath temperature, and the annealing procedure have been studied. X-Ray diffraction and electron microscopy were used to supplement flux and retention data of membranes made from a cellulose acetate-formamide-acetone casting solution.

Notes: Batch and flow recirculation cells were used to study the properties of high-flux ultrafiltration membranes with different macromolecular solutions. At low pressures, solutions of completely retained macromolecular solutes have a flux which is approximately the same as the flux of pure solvent. At higher pressures, the solution flux levels off. The flux, at the leveling-off period, is approximately inversely proportional to the solution concentration. In this plateau region the flux increases with temperature and agitation of the solution but decreases with time. These results are explained by the formation of a gel layer on the membrane surface during the filtration of macromolecular solutions. In ultrafiltration, in contrast to dialysis and GPC, a linear polymer penetrates the selective barrier more readily than does a globular protein of the same molecular weight. The difference may arise from the liquid shear stresses within the barrier medium due to the movement of fluid relative to the pore walls, which is large only in ultrafiltration. Also, retention of polymers was found to decrease with pressure and to increase with agitation of the solution.

Notes: Bass' feedback controller design technique is extended to distributed parameter systems and its use is illustrated for a parabolic system with boundary control. The development of the design technique rests on a conjecture concerning the necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of linear time invariant partial differential equations. It is shown through a study of the discretized analog of a distributed system that the most likely candidate for a Lyapunov functional general enough to yield the necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability is a double integral with a symmetric kernel.

Notes: Convective diffusion of heat is a problem which arises in many areas. Since most thermal transport situations involve more than one material insulation, supports, etc., the treatment of composite regions is of interest. In certain systems, namely, those involving chemical or nuclear reactions, heat generation may be either localized or distributed. In this paper a general analytical treatment of this problem is made by using a double Fourier series technique involving an extended orthogonality concept. This treatment is then applied to the solutions of heat transfer situations arising in electrochemical energy conversion systems. Experimental temperature profiles are presented which test the theory.

Notes: The utility of anisotropic ultrafiltration membranes in gas separation has been examined. These membranes consist of a thin (0.2-2μ) barrier layer supported upon a more porous supporting substructure. Gases permeate these membranes by a Knudsen diffusion mechanism. Permeabilities from 0.1 to 0.4 cm sec-1 cm Hg-1 were obtained. These values are 104 to 105 higher than most conventional gas separation membranes. These membranes may be useful in several gas separation processes.
